Two very different products share this name, and the first useful thing this page can do is separate them, because the specification process for each has almost nothing in common with the other.
Type one: a box die cut into an animal shape
These are used for party favours, children's gifting, seasonal retail, promotional packs and toy packaging. The design starts as a flat blank whose outline is an animal silhouette, with ears, tails or legs formed by folds and tabs rather than printed on.
For this type, the dieline is the specification. A list of dimensions will not describe it, because the shape determines everything: how the blank nests on the press sheet, how much board is wasted around the outline, whether it can be machine glued or has to be hand assembled, and whether it ships flat or has to go out made up.
- Start from a physical mock-up. Cut one by hand or ask for a white sample. An animal shape that works on screen frequently does not stand up.
- Decide what the shape has to hold. A hollow shaped box that holds nothing is a different design from one that has to carry sweets or a small toy without deforming.
- Check assembly. If a retailer or a parent has to assemble it, the fold sequence has to be obvious without instructions.
- Ask about board waste. Irregular outlines nest less efficiently than rectangles, which shows in the unit price rather than in the tooling, since the die is included.
Type two: retail packaging for an animal or pet product
Here the box is a conventional carton and the animal is the theme or the end user. Size it like any other retail pack:
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Measure | Product at its widest, deepest and tallest points, in the orientation it sits in the box |
| Add clearance | For the insert, partition or wrap you actually intend to use |
| Fix the board | Folding carton for shelf, corrugated for weight, rigid for gifting |
| State it | Internal length x width x depth, with the word internal written down |
Pet food and treat packaging carries its own labelling expectations, so reserve panel space for feeding guidance and ingredient information, and confirm what your market requires through your own review.
Print and finish notes for both types
Shaped boxes live or die on the die cut edge quality, so keep fine detail like whiskers and claws out of the outline and put them in print instead. Animal artwork tends to be illustrative and colour-rich, which prints well on a coated folding carton. Kraft board gives a natural look for pet and eco-positioned ranges but flattens bright colours, so test a sample before committing a whole range to it.
Ordering
Minimum order is 100 boxes, and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. That tooling inclusion matters more here than almost anywhere else, because an unusual outline costs no more to tool than a rectangle. Turnaround is stated per product in three lanes: rush with expedited production and air freight, standard by air, cost saver by sea, from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. Production is in West Chicago and Guangzhou.
This page is the guide. Animal boxes is the product page and the place to order, and toy boxes covers the adjacent format if the contents are the point rather than the shape. Send a sketch of the shape or the product measurements to request a quote.
