Bux board comes up when a buyer wants a carton that feels solid in the hand and does not flex when it is picked up full. It is a dense fibre board, stiffer than a comparable coated paperboard, and its natural surface is uncoated. This page explains when that trade is worth making. To order, use the bux board boxes product page.
Stiffness is what you are buying
Stiffness and print quality pull in opposite directions on this stock. A coated white paperboard takes fine halftones and bright colour because its surface is smooth and sealed. Bux board is denser and less absorbent of light, which is another way of saying that ink sits differently and colours read muted. What you get in exchange is a panel that resists bowing, an edge that holds its shape, and a box that does not feel flimsy when a customer lifts it.
That makes bux board a good fit for heavier retail goods, hardware and tool packaging, book and game boxes, and any carton that will be handled repeatedly on a shelf. It is a poor fit for a cosmetic carton that has to carry a photographic image.
Thickness, and how to choose it
| Relative caliper | How it behaves | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Lighter | Folds and creases easily, still noticeably stiffer than plain carton stock | Small retail cartons, sleeves, inner packs |
| Medium | Holds a square shape when empty, resists panel bow | Most retail bux board cartons, game and book style boxes |
| Heavy | Approaches rigid board behaviour, needs careful creasing | Heavier goods, boxes that are handled repeatedly, structural inners and partitions |
Rather than pick a number in the abstract, tell us the weight of the contents and how the box is handled, and the caliper will be recommended with your quote. If you want the underlying logic, what paperboard thickness to use covers it for board generally.
Printing on an uncoated surface
- One and two colour work reads well. Solid marks, line art and type land cleanly on the natural surface.
- Full colour needs a liner. Where photographic print is required, a printed sheet is laminated to the board, which adds a pass and a cost.
- Expect a warmer, softer colour. The same ink build looks different on uncoated stock than on coated white. Ask for the digital proof to be reviewed with that in mind.
- Foil and emboss work well. The contrast between a matt natural surface and a metallic foil is one of the strongest looks available on this stock.
Minimums, price and turnaround
The minimum is 100 boxes per size and artwork. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote once caliper, size, print and finish are set. Included: the die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof. Production runs at two plants, West Chicago in the United States and Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is stated per product across Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea) lanes, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks.
Send the contents weight, the size and your artwork to the quote form, or order from the bux board boxes page. For a stiffer, wrapped alternative, see rigid chipboard boxes.
