Candle makers usually ask for a box by wax weight, which is the one number that does not describe the glass. Ounces refer to fill, and two 9 oz jars can have different diameters, different wall thicknesses and very different lids. Your jar supplier publishes a spec sheet with the actual outside dimensions. That sheet, not the fill weight, is where a candle box starts.
The three numbers to pull off the jar
- Outside diameter at the widest point. On a straight sided tumbler that is anywhere on the wall. On a flared or footed jar it is the rim or the base, so check both.
- Height with the lid fitted. This is the working height. A flat metal lid adds very little, a wooden knob lid or a glass dome adds a lot, and a dome is often the reason a box has to grow half an inch.
- Height without the lid, in case you ship the lid separately or nest it.
Then add clearance. A jar that has to be forced past the flaps will get chipped during packing, and glass chips at the rim where the lid seats.
Round product, square box
A cylinder in a rectangular box touches on four points and rattles everywhere else. Three usual answers:
| Approach | What it does to the size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Snug square fit, jar diameter plus a small clearance | Smallest box, no insert cost | Retail boxes that are not shipped alone |
| Corrugated or paperboard insert ring | Adds the insert thickness on each side | Single jar ecommerce shipments |
| Moulded pulp or foam cradle | Adds the most, and sets the depth too | Heavy jars, multipacks, premium gifting |
Whichever you pick, quote the internal dimension of the box and describe the insert separately. A box quoted at 3.5 in square internally with a 0.15 in insert on each side holds a jar of about 3.2 in diameter, not 3.5.
Shipping glass, not just presenting it
A retail candle box and a candle shipper are different products with different board. A printed folding carton that looks right on a shelf will not survive a parcel network alone. Either specify corrugated for a box that ships by itself, or plan for the carton to go inside an outer mailer and size that mailer from the carton's external dimensions. If you are shipping multiples, work out the pack pattern before you order, because a two by two of jars is a very different box from a row of four.
Ordering, minimum and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die and plates are included along with design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints, so you can cut the box to your exact jar rather than to a rounded size. On a round product where a sixteenth of an inch decides whether the jar drops in cleanly, that is the whole ball game.
Turnaround comes in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported items such as rigid boxes with fitted cradles can run up to about 12 weeks, so candle brands working to a holiday deadline should start from the ship date and count backwards. Rush adds about 7 to 25% depending on the job. Our plants are in West Chicago and Guangzhou. To order, see custom candle boxes or candle boxes with insert.
Send the jar diameter, the height with the lid, your pack count and how it ships, and request a quote. If you have the jar supplier's spec sheet, attach it. That is the fastest path to a die that fits first time.
