A collapsible box gives you the look and feel of a rigid setup box without paying to freight and store empty space. The board and the printed wrap are built with hinged corners and a magnetic or tab closure, so the box folds flat for transit and locks into a square, rigid form when you assemble it. Whether that trade is worth it comes down to your storage, your freight and how many hands you have at pack time.
Flat versus fixed, side by side
| Collapsible rigid | Fixed rigid setup | |
|---|---|---|
| Arrives | Flat, in stacks | Assembled, in its full volume |
| Storage | A fraction of the shelf space | Full assembled footprint from day one |
| Freight | More units per carton, so less air moved | Higher volumetric cost per box |
| Your labour | Fold and lock each box before packing | None, open and fill |
| Structure | Rigid once locked, with visible hinge lines at the corners | Rigid throughout, no hinge lines |
Where collapsible wins
- Seasonal peaks. You can hold a large quantity for a holiday season without renting the space a fixed rigid order would need.
- Ecommerce gifting. The box goes inside a shipper, so you already have a packing step and folding one more thing costs little.
- Multi location brands. Flat boxes are cheap to move between your own sites.
- Subscription and PR kits. Assembly is already part of the kitting workflow.
Where a fixed rigid box is still the right answer
If the box is filled on an automated line, or your team has no time at pack, or the design requires an unbroken wrap with no hinge detail at the corners, a fixed rigid box is the better answer. It is also better where the box has to survive being reopened and reused many times by the end customer. Compare with rigid boxes before you commit, and if you want the magnetic click, magnetic closure boxes explains how that build works.
Specifying one
Give us the contents, not just a box size. The insert has to be designed for a box that folds, and a tray that is right for a fixed box may not clear the hinge on a collapsible one. Say how the box will be assembled, by hand at a bench or in a line, and say whether it will be stored flat for months, because that affects the closure choice. Print, lamination, foil and embossing all work on the wrap the same way they do on a fixed rigid box.
Minimums, pricing and lead time
The minimum order is 100 boxes per size and artwork. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on a written quote. Included: the die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints. Production runs at two plants, West Chicago in the United States and Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is stated per product across Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea) lanes, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks.
Send your contents, quantity and in hand date to the quote form and we will price a collapsible and a fixed build side by side so you can see the difference in writing.
