Pet is not one packaging category. A bag of soft treats, a rope toy, a joint supplement and a 12 pound bag of food have almost nothing in common except the aisle they sit in. Pick the format from the product, then let the brand system carry across all of them.
Format by product type
| Product | Usual format | The spec that matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Soft or baked treats | Stand up pouch, or a carton holding an inner bag | Barrier and reseal, since treats dry out or go soft in the pack |
| Chews and bones | Carton with a window, or a hang bag | Depth, because chews are irregular and puncture thin film |
| Toys | Header card, hang box or a window carton | The product has to be visible or touchable at shelf |
| Supplements | Tuck end carton around a bottle or pouch | Panel space for dosing by body weight and for warnings |
| Grooming | Carton with an insert for a bottle or bar | Leak containment and an insert that stops the bottle tipping |
| Food and litter | Corrugated shipper or a heavy duty bag | Weight rating and handle strength, not print |
Shelf reality: peg, shelf, or both
Pet retail mixes pegs and shelves inside a single aisle, and a buyer may move your SKU between them. If there is any chance of peg placement, put a hang tab or a euro slot in the dieline now. Adding one later means a new die and a reprint. Boxes built to hang also need to survive being pushed forward on a crowded peg, so a heavier board earns its cost. There is more on this format at hanging boxes.
Copy takes more space than founders expect
- Feeding or dosing by animal weight usually needs a small table, not a sentence.
- Ingredient and sourcing text is what pet buyers actually read on the back panel.
- Species and size range should be legible at arm's length on the front.
- Leave room for a barcode that a scanner can read on a curved or narrow panel.
If your product is edible, say so on the quote and tell us what the packaging touches directly. We will confirm in writing which board, coating and liner options are available for that job rather than making a general claim here.
Minimum, price and lead time
The minimum is 100 boxes. That is low enough to launch one flavour or one toy line without over-committing, which matters in a category where SKU counts multiply fast. Bulk pricing starts at about $0.48 per unit, driven by size, board, window and print coverage and confirmed on the quote. The die and plates, design support, free US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, so a second flavour on the same die only pays for plates and print.
Production is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air), and cost saver (sea) for the lowest freight cost and the longest wait. The floor is from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. Boxes are made at our West Chicago plant in the United States or our Guangzhou plant in China.
Selling a monthly pet box, see custom subscription boxes for how recurring runs are planned. Otherwise send your SKU list, product dimensions and quantities to /quote/ and ask for the three lanes priced side by side.
