Popcorn packaging splits into two different products that share a name. Concession service wants an open top tub or box that a customer eats straight out of. Retail and gifting want a closed box that holds a sealed bag, stacks on a shelf and survives shipping. Decide which one you are buying before you look at sizes, because the board, the shape and the print area are all different.
Open top service formats
- Tapered tub. Wide mouth, narrow base, stacks nested for storage. The default at a cinema or a stadium counter.
- Straight sided box. Prints flat and clean, reads better on camera and in photos, less stable when held one-handed.
- Scoop style. Angled front opening, made for grabbing handfuls, common at fairs and events.
Sizing by popped volume
Concession sizes are stated in ounces of popped corn. Popped corn is mostly air, so the numbers run much larger than they would for a weight-based product and they are not comparable to a bag of chips.
| Size tier | Typical service role |
|---|---|
| Small | Single serve, kids portion, sampling at an event |
| Medium | One adult, standard counter default |
| Large | Two people sharing, the refill tier |
| Jumbo | Group share and the top of a combo deal |
Rather than picking a tier name, measure the portion you actually serve, in cups or ounces of popped corn, and send that number. We will draw the box against your portion so your medium is genuinely your medium.
Board, coating and food contact
Popcorn carries butter and oil, which is the whole design problem. Board and coating choices should be specified against what you serve, so tell us on the quote whether the corn is buttered, whether it is served hot, and whether the box needs a coated surface or a liner. We confirm what is available for your job in writing. We do not publish blanket food contact claims, because the honest answer depends on the exact material run for your order.
Printing that survives a counter
Popcorn boxes get handled with greasy hands and stacked in bulk, so heavy dark ink coverage will show wear faster than a lighter design. One or two strong colours on white board hold up well, and a matte finish disguises handling better than gloss. If you run seasonal or event artwork, note that the die stays the same and only the plates change, which keeps a second design cheap.
Minimum, price and lead time
The minimum is 100 boxes, which is low enough for a single event run or a limited edition. Bulk pricing starts at about $0.48 per unit and the number for your job depends on size, board, coating and print coverage, confirmed on the quote. The die and plates, design support, free US shipping and a digital proof are included.
Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea). The floor is from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. Boxes are produced at our West Chicago plant in the United States or our Guangzhou plant in China.
If popcorn is one line in a wider snack range, price it with the rest at custom food boxes, or look at repeat run pricing on wholesale food boxes. To start, send your portion size, quantity and event date to /quote/.
