Flute is the wave of paper glued between two liners. Its height and its frequency decide almost everything about how a corrugated box behaves: how thick the wall is, how well it prints, how much it cushions, and how much it resists being crushed. E and B are the two profiles that most printed packaging decisions come down to.
The comparison in one table
| Property | E flute | B flute |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate caliper | About 1/16 inch | About 1/8 inch |
| Approximate flutes per foot | Around 90 | Around 50 |
| Print surface | Flatter, holds fine detail and small type better | Good, with more visible flute texture on large solids |
| Crush resistance | Lower, adequate for light contents | Higher, better under stacking |
| Cushioning | Minimal | Modest |
| Wall thickness cost | Takes less internal space, lower cube | Takes more internal space per wall |
| Typical use | Printed retail cartons, ecommerce mailers, inner packs | Die cut shippers, heavier retail boxes, inner fitments |
Choose E flute when
- The box is a printed retail item and the graphics carry the product.
- You want a corrugated mailer that still looks like a carton on the shelf.
- Internal space is tight and every 1/16 inch of wall matters.
- The contents are light and the transit is short.
Choose B flute when
- The filled box is heavy enough that someone will notice carrying it.
- The boxes will be stacked, in a warehouse or on a pallet.
- The box is large, where a thin wall starts to feel flimsy regardless of the contents.
- The box is an inner fitment or divider that has to hold its shape under load.
The combinations people forget
You are not restricted to one wall. EB double wall pairs the printable fine flute with a heavier one behind it, giving a printed outside surface and real strength. It costs more and takes more internal space, so it earns its place on heavy retail shippers rather than on everyday mailers. In the other direction, F flute at about 1/32 inch is thinner than E and is chosen when a small box needs to look almost like a folding carton while keeping a corrugated structure.
What it means for your quote
Flute changes the price of the board, not the price of the tooling. The cutting die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included on every order, so you can compare an E flute and a B flute version of the same box without paying twice to find out. The minimum is 100 boxes, pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, and turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush, which is expedited production plus air freight, standard on air, and cost saver on sea, from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
If you are sizing the box as well as choosing the board, corrugated shipping box dimensions covers internal versus external and pallet fit. To order, see corrugated boxes, or tell us the contents and the filled weight on a quote request and we will recommend a flute.
