Floss cartons sit at the small end of what folding carton equipment handles well, and that is the single most useful thing to know before you specify one. The dispenser is tiny and nearly cuboid, so the internal dimension is easy. What catches people out is everything the carton needs beyond the cavity.
Measure the dispenser, not the spool
Take the closed dispenser and measure three ways: the widest footprint, the depth front to back, and the height including the lid when it is shut. Check the hinge and the cutter, because both usually stand proud of the main shell by a fraction that matters at this scale. If the dispenser is supplied in a flow-wrap or a bag, measure the wrapped unit, since that is what actually goes in.
Then write the number down as internal length x width x depth and say the word internal on your quote. On a carton this small the board thickness is a meaningful fraction of the external size, so internal and external are two genuinely different specifications.
What the carton needs beyond the cavity
| Feature | Where it lives | Effect on the finished carton |
|---|---|---|
| Glue lap | Along one vertical edge, under the adjoining panel | Consumes blank width and sets a floor on how narrow a panel can be |
| Tuck flaps and dust flaps | Top and bottom | Adds blank length, and on very small cartons the flaps can foul each other |
| Hang tab or euro slot | Above the top panel, or die cut into it | Adds height above the cavity; a die cut slot needs board around it to hold weight |
| Variable data window for lot and expiry | A clear area on one panel | Takes usable print space, so plan it before the artwork is laid out |
Oral care is a peg category
Floss is usually merchandised on a peg wall next to brushes and picks, which makes the hang feature part of the structure rather than an afterthought. A die cut euro slot is cleaner and cheaper than an applied tab, but it relies on the board around the slot to carry the weight, and floss is light enough that this normally works. Get the retailer's peg spacing before you fix the carton height, because a pack that is a quarter inch too tall will foul the row above it.
Board and print
Small cartons in the 14pt to 20pt band fold cleanly and hold their shape, which is the industry-typical range for this kind of pack. Print is usually a straightforward four colour process with a brand spot colour, and the practical limit is legibility: ingredient and claim text at this panel size gets very small very quickly, so lay out the mandatory copy first and let the brand fill what is left.
Minimum, price basis and lead time
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included, so a die cut to your actual dispenser costs the same to tool as a generic one. We quote Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea), with a floor of from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, and specialty imported items up to about 12 weeks. Rush carries about 7 to 25%, depending on the job.
Send the closed dispenser dimensions and the peg spacing if you have it, and we will confirm the smallest carton we can run cleanly at /quote/. The neighbouring formats in the same category are toothbrush boxes and toothpaste boxes.
