A specification sheet for hairspray cartons. Aerosol packs have one extra layer of consideration compared with a bottle, because the primary container is pressurised and its transport is governed by rules that sit outside packaging. Everything structural is straightforward. The custom hairspray boxes product page is where the order is placed.
1. Can data to collect
- Can body diameter, taken from the can supplier's specification and confirmed on a filled, labelled can.
- Can height to the top of the valve cup, without the cap.
- Overall height with the overcap or actuator cap fitted, which is the figure the carton height is built on.
- Overcap diameter, which on many aerosols matches or slightly exceeds the can body.
- Net fill and gross weight per unit, for the shipper and pallet plan.
2. Carton dimensions
Internal footprint is the larger of can diameter and overcap diameter, plus about 1/16 in per side for a hand loaded carton. A round can in a square carton leaves four corner voids, which is normal and does no harm as long as the can cannot tip. Internal height is the overall capped height plus about 1/16 in. State all dimensions as internal.
3. Construction
| Construction | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse tuck end carton | Standard retail single can packs | Most economical, front crease falls on the face |
| Straight tuck end carton | Colour led retail packs | Clean front panel, slightly more board |
| Glued seal end carton | Heavier cans and fast filling lines | Closure does not rely on friction |
| Carton with a collar | Slim cans in a larger carton | Collar stops the can tipping and rattling |
| Multi pack tray and sleeve | Salon and value packs | Tray carries the weight, sleeve carries the print |
A full aerosol is heavier than most people expect, so for anything above a small can a glued base is a better specification than a tuck bottom.
4. Transport and marking
Aerosols are pressurised and their carriage by road, sea and air is governed by rules that depend on the formulation, the propellant and the carrier. Those requirements, including any hazard marking and any limits on air freight, come from your filler, your regulatory adviser and your carrier. Give us the marking layout and we will place it on the dieline and show it on your proof. We do not certify compliance and a packaging quote should never be read as clearance to ship.
5. Materials and finishing
Material options: standard white cardstock, kraft eco friendly brown cardstock, textured Neenah cardstock, coloured stock, corrugated stock, rigid press board, foil metallic cardstock and holographic stock. Finishing: gloss and matte lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing. Bathroom humidity is worth designing for, so a laminate or aqueous coating is a sensible specification on a carton that will sit in a steamy room.
