How Many Colors Can You Print on a Box?

Key Takeaways

  • Four process colours, cyan, magenta, yellow and black, reproduce full colour photography and almost any artwork. Most printed boxes need nothing beyond those four.
  • Spot colours are added when a brand colour has to be exact, when you want a colour that process ink cannot hit cleanly, or when you are printing a solid flood of one colour.
  • Printing plates are included on custom orders, so adding a colour does not add a plate charge. What it can add is press time and ink.
  • On kraft or unbleached board, plan for a white underprint if you want colours to read true, because the brown substrate shifts every ink laid over it.

In practical terms, there is no hard ceiling on how many colours you can print on a box. The real question is which colour system your artwork needs, because that decides both how the box looks and what the run costs.

Process colour: four inks, almost any image

Four colour process builds every shade from cyan, magenta, yellow and black laid down as fine dots. It is how photography gets printed, and for most packaging it is the whole answer. If your artwork is a product photograph, an illustration with gradients, or anything with many colours, process is both the cheapest and the most faithful route. Where it struggles is with very specific solid colours: a precise corporate blue, a bright orange, or a metallic effect can drift under process, because the eye is unforgiving about a brand colour it knows.

Spot colour: mixed ink for an exact match

A spot colour is pre mixed rather than built from dots, so it lands exactly where you specify. Brands use spot colours for three things: an exact brand match, a colour outside the practical process range, and large solid areas where a flat, even lay of ink matters. You can combine both systems, running process for the imagery and one or two spot colours for the logo and the flood.

What colour count actually costs you

ChoiceEffect on the job
One colour on kraftThe cheapest printed option. Reads natural and hides handling marks
Two spot coloursCommon for logo plus one accent. Crisp, flat and very controllable
Four colour processFull imagery. The usual choice for retail packaging with photography
Process plus one or two spotsPhotography with an exact brand colour. More press setup, best of both
Any of the above plus a white underprint on kraftAdds a pass, but is what makes colours read true on brown board

Printing plates are included on custom orders, which removes the per colour plate charge that many quotes carry. Colour count still affects press setup and ink, so it is a real line, just a smaller one than you might expect.

The substrate decides more than people think

The same ink prints differently on different board. A coated white surface gives the brightest, most accurate colour. Uncoated white is softer and slightly duller. Kraft, which is brown, shifts every colour laid on it toward warm and mutes anything light. None of these is wrong, but if you have chosen kraft for its look and also expect a bright teal, you need a white underprint first. Decide that before the proof, because it changes the artwork build.

Check it on the proof, not on your screen

A digital proof comes before anything prints, and it is the right place to check colour breaks, overprints and whether small reversed type is going to hold. Screens are backlit and boxes are not, so treat your monitor as a layout tool and the proof as the colour conversation. If a brand colour is critical, say so in writing when you request the quote so it is handled as a spot from the start rather than converted late.

Ordering and turnaround

Minimum order is 100 boxes. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, with colour count, coverage and finishing all reflected there. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and the digital proof are included. Turnaround is stated per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight, premium about 7 to 25% depending on the job), standard by air and cost saver by sea, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. We produce in West Chicago, US, and Guangzhou, China.

Send your artwork and say which colours are brand critical, and we will tell you whether they need spot inks before you commit. Start at /quote/. If you are also choosing a substrate, what is SBS board explains the whitest of the common options, and how much does custom packaging cost per unit sets colour count against the other cost drivers.
