Cosmetics combine the three things couriers punish: glass, liquids and a customer who will photograph the parcel the moment it arrives. Packing for shipping is a different exercise from packing for a shelf, and most damage happens when one carton is asked to do both jobs.
Two layers, two jobs
The retail carton sells the product, holds the branding, carries the ingredient panel and fits the shelf. The shipper protects it. If you are fulfilling ecommerce orders from the same stock you sell into retail, plan a shipper sized to the outside of the retail carton plus cushioning. If you are direct to consumer only, you can combine the two, but then the outer has to be corrugated and built for transit, not a light paperboard carton with a hero image on it.
Stop the leak before it starts
| Closure type | Risk in transit | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Flip top cap | Pops open under pressure or impact | Tape, band or shrink the closure; consider a liner seal |
| Pump | Actuates in the box, or snaps off | Ship locked down, clipped, or bagged separately |
| Screw cap | Loosens with vibration and temperature change | Induction seal or liner, torque checked at filling |
| Dropper | Leaks around the bulb, glass pipette breaks | Seal the neck, cushion the top of the bottle |
| Jar with a lid | Lid turns, product smears the label | Seal film under the lid plus a tamper band |
Glass, powder and pressed product
Glass chips at the point where it touches something hard, which is usually another piece of glass. A partition, a fitted paperboard tray or an individual sleeve costs little and removes the main failure mode. Pressed powders crack under vibration rather than impact, so they need a snug fit with no free movement at all, not a large cushion. Palettes travel better flat than on edge. If a compact has a mirror, treat it as a glass item.
Heat, cold and the transit reality
Parcels sit in vans and depots. Lipstick and balm soften and deform in summer heat, emulsions can separate after repeated freezing, and pressure changes on air freight push air through imperfect closures. You cannot control the network, but you can specify a closure that seals properly, add a tamper seal, avoid shipping heat sensitive products in the hottest weeks, and tell customers when a parcel may have been warm on arrival. A carton with good contact all round also slows temperature swings slightly compared with a half empty box.
What to tell your packaging supplier
- The filled, labelled dimensions of each item, including the closure.
- How many units go in one order, and the most common combination.
- Whether the retail carton is also the shipper.
- Whether anything is glass, pressurised or heat sensitive.
- Where it ships to and by which service.
Ordering
The minimum is 100 boxes, and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, so a tray cut to hold your exact bottle costs no more to tool than a plain pad. Turnaround is quoted per job in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery.
Send your product dimensions and a typical order profile to the quote form and we will propose a carton, an insert and a shipper. Related: custom cosmetic boxes and cosmetic box dimensions.
