This choice gets framed as sustainability against looks, and it is mostly neither. It is a printing decision with a visual consequence. Decide what your artwork needs to do, and the board picks itself.
What the two actually are
Kraft board is made from pulp that has not been bleached, which is why it is brown and why the fibre is generally long and strong. White board has been bleached, and coated white grades add a clay coating that gives a smooth, bright printing surface. Both are paper, both are widely recycled, and both come in a range of calipers.
What happens to your artwork
| Design element | On kraft | On coated white |
|---|---|---|
| Photographs | Muted and warm, low contrast | Accurate and sharp |
| Brand color match | Shifted by the brown base unless underprinted white | Predictable and matchable |
| White elements | Need an opaque white ink, which is an extra pass | Free, they are the board |
| One or two color line art | Looks excellent, often better than on white | Looks clean but more generic |
| Foil stamping and embossing | Strong contrast, a signature look | Clean, especially against a solid panel |
The white ink question is the one that catches people out. On kraft, white is not the absence of ink. Anything intended to be white has to be printed with an opaque white, and a single pass of it often still shows the brown through. Design around that instead of fighting it: line art, single color logos and knocked out type in a dark ink all suit kraft naturally.
Strength and structure
At the same caliper the two behave similarly in a box. Structure comes from caliper, construction and, in corrugated, from the flute profile, not from whether the board is bleached. If a box is bowing or crushing, the answer is a heavier caliper, a different construction or a corrugated grade, not a switch from kraft to white.
Cost
Board is only one line in a box price. Ink coverage, construction, finishing and volume all move a quote more than the choice between kraft and white. A heavily printed kraft box with an opaque white underprint can easily cost more than a simply printed white one. If cost is the driver, reduce coverage and finishing before you switch board.
How to decide in one question
Ask what the box has to reproduce. If it has to reproduce a photograph, a skin tone or an exact brand color, take white board. If it has to look unbleached, tactile and plain, take kraft and design for one or two inks. If you want both, a kraft outer with a printed white panel or a white inner is a common compromise. Our material options include kraft eco friendly brown cardstock, standard white cardstock, corrugated stock, colored stock, textured stock, rigid press board and foil metallic cardstock.
Ordering either one
The minimum is 100 boxes, and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, so you can see your artwork on the board you chose before it runs. Turnaround is quoted per job in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery.
If you are unsure, send the artwork to the quote form and we will tell you how it will land on each board. Related: kraft boxes buying guide and what paperboard thickness to use.
