This is a specification reference for lip kit boxes. A lip kit is a kit before it is a box, so this page is organised around the interior first, then the shell, then the commercial terms. To order, see lip kit boxes.
Interior: specify this first
List every component with its measured dimensions: liner pencil, lipstick or gloss bullet, brush, applicator, card or leaflet. Measure each with its cap or closure fitted. Then choose how they are held.
| Insert type | Holds components by | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Die cut corrugated or board insert | Cut cavities that grip the component | Most kits, recyclable, no extra tooling charge |
| Vacuum formed tray | A moulded cavity per component | Precise presentation, mixed shapes |
| Foam insert | Compression around each component | Heavier or fragile components |
| Rise up platform | Lifting the kit as the lid opens | Premium unboxing |
| Elastic or ribbon retention | Holding against a backing panel | Slim kits and gift sets |
The divider arithmetic
A four cavity insert is not four times one cavity. There are three dividers between cavities plus two outer walls, and each has a caliper. Add them before you fix the internal dimension, or the kit will not seat. This is the single most common cause of a lip kit insert that has to be re-cut.
Structure options
- Two piece rigid boxes and magnetic closure boxes over greyboard, the usual premium format.
- Drawer or slide and shell boxes, which present the kit as the drawer opens.
- Straight tuck end and reverse tuck end folding cartons for volume retail.
- Tray and sleeve, which shows the kit as the sleeve slides off.
- Window cartons for showing shade at retail.
Print and finish
Offset and digital printing, matte and gloss lamination, soft touch, spot gloss, foil stamping and embossing. Colour cosmetics packaging depends heavily on shade accuracy, so ask for the digital proof to be reviewed against your shade standard, and be aware that a matte laminate shifts perceived colour slightly compared to gloss. Each finish is a separate pass.

Shipping a kit direct to consumers
A rigid lip kit box is presentation, not a shipper. Sent bare through a parcel network it arrives with scuffed corners and a crushed lid. For direct to consumer fulfilment, put the kit box inside a corrugated mailer with enough clearance for a light cushion on every face, and size the mailer on the external dimension of the kit box, which includes the greyboard and the wrap.
What to send with an order
- Every kit component, measured with closures fitted, or physical samples.
- The layout you want, or a photo of the kit arranged as you imagine it.
- Artwork in vector form with fonts outlined, or a brief for our design support.
- Quantity and the date you need it, so we can recommend a lane.
Send the component list and the quantity and we will return an insert layout, an internal box dimension and a price. See also custom cosmetic boxes, then request a quote.
