Lipstick cartons are small, high volume and heavily judged, and almost every complaint about them comes down to one of two things: the tube moves inside the box, or the print did not land the way the brand expected. Both are decided before tooling.
Measuring the tube
Take these from a closed, filled tube, not from the component spec sheet alone, because tolerances stack up:
- Outside diameter at the widest point. On a square or oval tube, take both axes.
- Full height with the cap fully seated. A cap that is not pushed home reads short.
- Cap diameter if it differs from the body, which it often does on a magnetic cap.
- Base profile, because a tapered base sits differently in a platform insert than a flat one.
Then add clearance so the tube drops in on a filling line without catching. The result is your internal length x width x depth, and you should say internal when you ask for a quote.
Insert options, from cheapest up
| Insert | What it does | Cost impact |
|---|---|---|
| None | Tube free in the carton | Lowest, and the tube will move |
| Card platform or collar | Holds the tube upright at one point | Small, and it solves most of the rattle |
| Corrugated or board fitment | Holds at two points, supports multipacks | Moderate |
| Foam or flocked fitment | Full cradle, premium feel on opening | Highest, and usually paired with a rigid box |
Single, duo or set
A single tube carton is a slim tuck end box. A duo or trio can stand the tubes side by side, which keeps the carton slim and tall, or lay them in a tray, which makes it flat and wide. The second option presents better when opened and usually costs more because it needs a fitment. Decide this before the die, because a tray version is not a variant of the standing version, it is a different die.
Print and finish
At this size the finish carries the brand. Common combinations are matte board with a foil logo, soft touch with spot gloss, or a clean single colour on uncoated stock for a minimal look. Foil and embossing both need artwork prepared as separate layers, which our page on packaging artwork file formats explains. Every order includes a digital proof before anything prints, which is the moment to check that a small logo has not lost detail.
Do not forget the outer
Lipstick cartons are usually cased for retail or for fulfilment. Work out the case count and pattern after the unit carton is final, sizing the case from the unit's external dimensions so the count comes out whole. That is also the moment to check how the cases sit on a pallet.
Price, minimum and lead time
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote, since board, finish, foil and any fitment all move it. The cutting die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, so a carton cut to your exact tube diameter costs no more to tool than a near standard one.
Turnaround runs in three lanes: rush (expedited production with air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery, with specialty imported items such as rigid sets up to about 12 weeks. Rush adds about 7 to 25% depending on the job. We produce in West Chicago and in Guangzhou.
To order, go to custom lipstick boxes. Measure one closed tube, decide single or multipack, and request a quote with the finish you want priced alongside a simpler option so you can see the difference.
