Lollipops are an easy product to package badly, because the candy is compact and the stick is long, so the box is mostly empty space that still has to be engineered. The trick is to design around the stick and the head separately. To order, see lollipop boxes.
Measure the stick and the head separately
- Overall length: from the top of the head to the end of the stick, with the wrapper on if the pop is individually wrapped.
- Head diameter: at the widest point, including the wrapper twist if there is one.
- Head thickness: a flat disc head and a spherical head fill a cavity completely differently.
- Wrapper tail: a twisted wrapper adds length at both ends and is the measurement most often forgotten.
Format by use
| Format | How it is sized | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single pop carton | Overall length by head diameter plus clearance | Gift, favour and promotional pops |
| Multipack carton | Heads in a row, sticks nested alongside or alternating | Retail multipacks |
| Window carton | As above, with the window over the heads | Showing colour at retail |
| Counter display with inner tray | Counter footprint first, then pop count | Impulse purchase at the till |
| Hanging card | Card length plus hang feature | Peg merchandising |
Nesting pops saves real money
In a multipack, alternating the direction of the pops so heads sit beside sticks reduces the box footprint substantially compared with lining them all up the same way. Try both layouts on paper before you fix a size. Since the die is included, a layout change costs nothing in tooling, and the saving lands on board and freight for the life of the SKU.
Food contact and barrier
Individually wrapped pops carry their own barrier, so the carton is presentation and protection. Unwrapped pops need a food contact appropriate inner surface and a much tighter conversation about moisture, because hard candy goes sticky in humid air and then bonds to whatever it touches. If your product is unwrapped, say so early and expect to specify a liner or a sealed inner.
Counter displays are sized by the counter
A display that does not fit the space a retailer has is not merchandised, it is stored in the back. Get the counter or shelf footprint before the display is drawn, and design the display to hold a full case so restocking is one movement. See counter display boxes for the formats.
Ordering and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included. We produce in West Chicago in the US and in Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. For the wider category, see custom candy boxes.
Send your pop dimensions with the wrapper on, the count per pack, and your quantity. Request a quote and we will lay out the cavity and price it.
