Polish bottles are small, heavy for their size and made of glass, so the carton has two jobs: fit closely enough that the bottle does not rattle, and hold together when a shelf of them gets knocked. Both jobs start with measuring the bottle correctly.
Measure the corners, not the faces
Most polish bottles are square or faceted. A square bottle measured across its flat faces gives a number that is too small, because the bottle rotates in the carton and presents its diagonal. Measure across the corners and use that figure. Then measure height with the brush cap fully seated, since the cap is part of the product and frequently wider than the bottle shoulder.
A 15 ml (0.5 fl oz) fill is the usual retail size for nail lacquer, and 5 ml and 8 ml are common for treatments and minis. Those are fill volumes, not dimensions. Two bottles at the same fill can differ in footprint by a noticeable margin depending on glass weight and base thickness, so the fill tells you which family of bottle you are in and nothing more.
Row maths for a multi-pack
Once a single bottle is measured, a multi-pack is arithmetic. Take W as the widest bottle dimension and n as the number in a row:
- Internal length = (W x n) + (divider thickness x number of dividers) + about 1/8 in total slack.
- Internal width = W plus about 1/16 in, for a single file row.
- Internal height = bottle height with cap plus the thickness of any floor pad.
Do this before the artwork is drawn, because the number of bottles in the row sets the panel width the designer is working on, and changing it later means redrawing the whole face.
Keeping glass from moving
| Option | Best for | Trade off |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted paperboard partition | Multi-packs and gift sets | Takes internal length, fully recyclable |
| Die cut card collar | Single bottle retail cartons | Cheap and light, less shock protection |
| Foam pad in the base | Heavy glass, ecommerce shipping | Adds cost and a mixed material |
| Snug carton, no insert | Tight retail packs | Needs accurate measurement and consistent glass |
Construction, print and ordering
Single bottle cartons usually run as reverse tuck or straight tuck end boxes. Sets tend to run as tuck top or two piece rigid boxes with a partition. Polish is a colour led category, so most of these jobs go out on white cardstock for accurate colour, with spot colours specified where a shade has to match the lacquer itself. Foil and metallic stock are available where a range reads as premium.
The minimum is 100 boxes. Pricing runs from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote. The die, plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, which is why we would rather cut a die to your bottle than talk you into a near standard size. Turnaround is quoted per job in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery.
Send the bottle measurements and the pack count to the quote form, or mail a bottle and we will measure it here. Related: custom nail polish boxes and tuck box dimensions.
