Nail polish packaging has to deal with three awkward facts at once: the container is glass, the contents can stain anything they touch, and the bottle shape is usually designed for the shelf rather than for packing. This guide covers what to settle before you order from custom nail polish boxes.
Measure in three places
Take a caliper to a finished, labelled bottle with the cap on, and record the diameter at the cap, at the shoulder and at the base, plus the overall height. Many polish bottles have a wide decorative cap sitting on a narrow neck, and some have a square base that is wider than anything above it. Your carton is set by whichever of those is largest, plus clearance.
Two things to include that people forget: a shrink band or tamper seal around the neck, and the label itself, which on a wrapped bottle can add a visible amount to the diameter. Measure the bottle as it will actually leave your bench.
Keeping the bottle upright and still
- Snug single carton. For a single bottle, a tuck carton sized close to the bottle is usually enough, provided the fit at the cap end is tight.
- Base recess. A small die cut pad with a cut out for the base stops a square bottle rotating inside a round cavity.
- Full fitment for multipacks. A fence or moulded tray that separates each bottle top to bottom. Half depth dividers let the bottles meet at the shoulder, which is exactly where they chip.
- Outer shipper. Retail cartons are not shipping cartons. For parcel delivery, put the retail packs in a shipper with retention, the same principle covered on how to package candles for shipping.
Board, print and finish
Folding carton board is standard for a single bottle carton and takes fine print and foil well. For multipacks and gift sets, fine flute corrugated or a rigid box gives the structure to carry the extra weight of several glass bottles. Watch the finish choice against the product: a matte soft touch laminate looks excellent and shows a polish smudge clearly, which is worth knowing before a retail display gets handled all day.
If the pack hangs on a peg rather than facing on a shelf, the hang feature has to be designed in and reinforced, which is covered on what a hang hole on packaging is.
Shipping, labelling and what to confirm
Nail polish is regulated as a hazardous material by some carriers and in some lanes, and the rules cover how it is declared, labelled and transported rather than how the carton is printed. Confirm the current requirements with your carrier and your own regulator for the markets you sell in, and bring any labelling you are required to carry to the quote so the panel is designed in from the start rather than added later.
Minimum, price and lead time
The minimum is 100 boxes, priced from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, so a cavity cut to your exact bottle is not a premium over a generic size. Production is quoted per product in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Two plants, West Chicago and Guangzhou.
Send the three bottle diameters, the capped height and your pack counts with your quote request, then order from the nail polish boxes page once the structure is agreed.
