Fragrance packaging is one of the few categories where the box is doing as much selling as the product inside it, and where a couple of millimetres of slack ruins the effect. A perfume box has no standard size, because flacons are deliberately non standard. What follows is the measuring sequence that gets you a bottle that sits still and a lid that closes with a bit of resistance.
The measuring sequence
- Cap on, collar fitted. Measure the bottle in its finished, shipped state. A sprayer collar can be the widest circumference on the whole piece, and it is the one people forget.
- Find the true widest point. Many flacons taper. Measure the base, the waist and the shoulder, and use the largest of the three for each axis.
- Measure height to the top of the cap, not to the neck.
- Add the insert. Whatever cradles the bottle adds its own thickness on each face it touches. Decide foam, paperboard cradle or moulded pulp now, not later.
- Add clearance last, and keep it small. A gift box wants a snug fit, so 1 to 2 mm is usually plenty once the insert is accounted for.
Give us the total as internal length x width x depth and say the word internal. On rigid construction, where the wall runs commonly in the 1.5 to 3 mm range on each side, internal and external are meaningfully different numbers.
Rigid, folding carton, or both
Fragrance runs the full range. A rigid box built from wrapped chipboard gives the weight and the slow lid that reads as luxury. A folding carton is lighter and cheaper per unit and is the normal choice for a travel size, a discovery set or a refill. Many brands use both: a rigid box for the flagship and a carton for the extensions. Because the die is included on every custom order, running two structures does not add a tooling bill, and the real cost difference sits in materials and finishing.
Finishing, and what it does to your dimensions
| Finish | Effect on the box | Dimensional impact |
|---|---|---|
| Foil stamping | Metallic logo or border with genuine shine | None. Applied to the surface |
| Emboss or deboss | Raised or recessed detail you feel before you look | Negligible, but avoid placing it across a fold line |
| Soft touch lamination | Matte, velvety hand feel, hides fingerprints | None worth allowing for |
| Magnetic closure on rigid | Snap shut lid | Magnets sit inside the wall, so the wall allowance grows |
| Ribbon pull or satin liner | Opening ritual | Liner material takes internal depth, so include it in the insert measurement |
Ordering, minimum and lead time
Minimum order is 100 boxes. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, because rigid construction, foil and inserts all sit above that floor. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included.
Turnaround is stated per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight, at a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job), standard by air, and cost saver by sea. The floor is from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Rigid and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks, which is the number to plan a holiday launch against. We produce in West Chicago, US, and Guangzhou, China.
Send the bottle's height, widest width and cap style, plus a note on whether you want rigid or carton, and we will confirm the internal dimensions and the lane on a written quote at /quote/. To order the format directly, see perfume boxes, and if you are packing miniatures alongside the main line, the same measuring method applies at a smaller scale.
