Pet Treat Box Dimensions and Standard Sizes

Key Takeaways

  • Size a treat carton from volume, not from the number of pieces. Weigh a measured container of your actual product to get bulk density, then divide net fill weight by that density to get the volume the carton must hold.
  • Add settling headspace and confirm it on a real fill run, because treats settle differently by shape, moisture and fat content.
  • Reserve panel space before the artwork starts. Pet food and treat labels sold in the US are governed by state feed laws that follow AAFCO model regulations; confirm the required panel with your regulatory advisor.
  • Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote.

The question behind most pet treat carton briefs is really a volume question. You know the net weight you want to sell, and you need a box that holds it without looking half empty on shelf. Piece dimensions will not get you there, because treats are irregular and they pack at wildly different densities.

Work out the volume before you draw the box

Fill a container of known volume with your actual product, pouring it the way the filling line will, then weigh it. That gives you bulk density. Divide your intended net fill weight by the bulk density and you have the volume the carton must hold. Then add headspace so the product settles below the top rather than jamming the closure. How much headspace depends entirely on your treat, so run it and measure it rather than taking a rule of thumb from a supplier.

StepHow to capture itUnits to record
Bulk densityWeigh a container of known volume, filled as the line fills itg per litre, or oz per cubic inch
Required fill volumeNet fill weight divided by bulk densitylitres or cubic inches
Settled headspaceRun a real fill, close it, transport it, then lookDepth in mm or inches above the settled product
Carton internal sizeFill volume plus headspace, shaped to your shelf facingInternal length x width x depth

The last row is where shape enters. The same volume can be a tall narrow carton or a wide flat one, and the shelf facing you have been given usually decides which.

Bag in box, or lined carton

Most treats with any fat content need a barrier between the product and the board. A gusseted bag inside a printed carton is the common route: the bag handles the barrier and the reseal, the carton handles the structure and the print. A lined or coated carton is cheaper and works for dry, low-fat products, but it gives you no reseal. Decide this early, because a bag adds thickness and forces the carton internal dimension up.

Label space is a dimension too

Pet food and treat labelling in the US sits under state feed laws that largely follow the AAFCO model regulations, alongside federal requirements. The practical effect on packaging is that a defined block of mandatory information has to fit legibly on specific panels. Get that block from your regulatory advisor, lay it out first, and design the brand around what is left. Retro-fitting a guaranteed analysis panel onto finished artwork is how carton redesigns happen twice.

Shipping and the master carton

Treats are heavy for their volume, so the case pack is usually limited by weight before it is limited by size. Ask your 3PL or retailer for their maximum carton weight and settle the case count against it. Our guide to what a master carton is covers the marks, the barcode format and the pallet arithmetic.

Minimum, price basis and turnaround

Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. We quote three lanes: Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, with specialty imported items running up to about 12 weeks. Rush carries a premium of about 7 to 25%, depending on the job. Production runs at West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China.

Send your net fill weight, a bulk density reading and the shelf facing you have been allocated, and we will size the carton and the case against it at /quote/. For the wider category, see pet food boxes.
