Razor packaging has an unusual constraint for a small carton: the product is sharp and the product moves. Everything else about sizing a razor box follows from those two facts. Size to the head, then hold the head still.
Measure by format
| Format | What sets the carton |
|---|---|
| Safety razor, single unit | Handle length plus the head, and a head that is wide relative to a slim handle, so the carton is wider than it looks like it needs to be |
| Cartridge system, handle plus refills | The refill stack, which is often deeper than the handle. Two compartments usually beat one oversized cavity. |
| Disposable multipack | Nesting. Disposables lie head to tail to save width, so measure the nested arrangement, not one razor times the count. |
| Subscription refill pack | Mail resilience and a flat profile, because the pack is sized to fit a letterbox more often than a shelf |
The three numbers
- Total length of the razor as assembled, head fitted, from the butt of the handle to the top of the head.
- Width across the head at the widest point, including any pivot housing or guard bar that sits proud.
- Depth at the thickest section of the handle, which on a weighted metal handle may be greater than the head depth.
Then add the retention. Whatever holds the razor, a card platform, a die-cut retainer, a moulded pulp tray or a blister, has thickness, and that thickness belongs in the internal dimension. State the result as internal length x width x depth and confirm on the quote that the number given back to you is internal rather than external.
Retention, because the blade will find the wall
A razor loose in a carton slides the length of the box every time it is handled, and a cartridge edge against corrugated or board will score it and eventually cut through. Options, roughly in order of cost:
- A folded card platform with a die-cut slot that the handle sits in.
- A product retainer, a film-suspension insert that holds the razor off every surface.
- A moulded pulp or thermoformed tray cut to the razor outline, which also presents well when the box is opened.
- A blister card, if the item hangs on a peg rather than sitting on a shelf.
Retail hanging and shelf notes
Razors are frequently merchandised on pegs, which means a hang hole in the carton or a blister card behind it. A hang feature changes the top panel of the dieline and the load path of the whole pack, so decide it before artwork rather than after. If the pack sits on a shelf instead, common gondola shelf depths run about 16 to 22 inches, so a deep carton wastes facings rather than gaining them.
Ordering and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes, and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included, which means a carton cut to the exact head width of your razor costs no more to tool than a rounded one. We produce in West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Rush adds about 7 to 25% depending on the job.
Order at razor boxes. If the pack is also the shipper for a subscription programme, the method on sizing a corrugated shipping box covers the outer and the board choice.
Send the three measurements and a photo of the razor, and we will come back through the quote form with an internal dimension, a retention recommendation and a written price.
