Ring Box Dimensions and Standard Sizes

Key Takeaways

  • A ring box is sized by its insert, not by the ring. The foam or flocked slot sets the footprint and the depth, and the shell is built around it.
  • Give the internal length x width x depth of the finished cavity. On a rigid ring box the wall and wrap can add a noticeable amount to the outside, so state which number your quote refers to.
  • Because the die is included at iBox, a cavity sized to your actual insert costs no more to tool than a near standard one, which matters more on small boxes where a quarter inch is a large share of the footprint.
  • Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote.

Ring boxes are the smallest thing most brands ever order, and the usual sizing question is backwards. The ring does not set the size. The insert does, and the insert is set by how you want the ring presented when the lid comes up.

Start with the presentation, then the insert

Decide which of these you are building before you measure anything:

  • A slot insert, where the band sits in a split pad and the stone stands proud. The slot depth has to clear the full band, so the cavity is deeper than the ring is tall.
  • A pillow or roll, where the ring sits over a soft bolster. This is the bulkiest option and usually drives the largest footprint.
  • A flat pad, where the ring lies down. The smallest option, used for stacking rings and plain bands.
  • A double slot for a pair, which roughly doubles one dimension and is the most common reason a spec has to be redone.

Measuring a small cavity properly

Measure the ring at its widest, which for anything with a stone is across the setting and not across the band. Measure its height from the bottom of the band to the top of the stone, standing as it will sit. Then add clearance so the lid closes without pressing on the stone: if the lid touches, the box will mark the piece over time and the spring on a hinged lid will feel wrong.

Write the result as internal length x width x depth of the finished cavity, and state whether the figure is before or after the insert is fitted. On a small box the insert can take a third of the interior.

Construction choices that change the outside dimension

ConstructionWhat it adds outside the cavityNotes
Folding carton (paperboard)Least, a single board caliper per wallLowest cost, flat ships, good print surface
Rigid box with wrapBoard plus wrap on every wall, on base and lidThe premium feel most jewellery brands want
Rigid with a shoulder or collarBase wall, collar wall and lid wall stack upSee our note on what a shoulder box is
Drawer or sleeveAn extra wall on the sliding axisNeeds a running clearance so it does not bind

This is why a ring box quoted at 2 in square internally is not a 2 in box on the shelf, and why a shipper built to an assumed outside dimension can end up too tight.

The outer box, if it ships alone

A ring box sold online usually travels inside a mailer with a gift bag, a card and sometimes a second presentation sleeve. Size that mailer after the ring box is final, not at the same time. If you are also buying the mailer, the internal dimension of the mailer is the outside dimension of the ring box plus whatever else goes in the parcel.

Ordering, minimum and turnaround

Minimum order is 100 boxes. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, since rigid construction, wrap material, foil and insert type all move it. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included.

Turnaround runs in three lanes: rush (expedited production with air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Rigid and hand assembled work, which most premium ring boxes are, sits toward the long end and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks, so plan backwards from your season rather than forwards from today. Rush adds about 7 to 25% depending on the job. We produce in West Chicago and in Guangzhou. To order the product itself, see custom ring boxes.

Send the ring dimensions, the insert style you want and the quantity, and request a quote. If you post a photo of the piece in the box you eventually want to replace, that is usually faster than a drawing.
