A ring is tiny and a ring box is not sized by it. It is sized by the insert that holds the ring upright and by how far the stone stands proud of the band. Get those two right and the box follows.
The measuring sequence
- Measure the tallest setting in your range, from the top edge of the band to the highest point of the stone or setting. This is the number that decides whether the lid closes.
- Measure the band width and thickness, because that is what the insert slot has to grip. A wide band needs a wider slot, and a slot cut for a thin band will not hold a wide one.
- Decide the presentation angle. A ring displayed vertically in a slot needs height. A ring lying flat in a recess needs footprint. These give completely different boxes.
- Add the insert body. The foam or flocked card that forms the slot has its own thickness under the ring, and that is part of the internal depth.
- Add the lid clearance so the lid never touches the stone. Contact between a lid liner and a setting is how a box scuffs its own product.
There is no industry standard ring box size, so measure your own range and quote the number you get. Because the die is included in the job, a box cut to your exact setting height costs no more to tool than a generic one.
Insert choices
| Insert | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Split foam slot, velvet or flock covered | The classic. Grips the band under tension, presents the ring upright, forgiving across band widths. |
| Die-cut card platform with a slit | Lighter and cheaper, works well for a thin band and a low setting, less premium in the hand. |
| Moulded recess for flat presentation | Keeps the box shallow, good for a wedding band or a stackable set, poor for a raised stone. |
| Double slot for a pair | Engagement and wedding band sets. Doubles the footprint, not the height. |
Construction: hinged, lift-off, or drawer
A hinged lid is what the category expects, and the hinge is the part that fails, so specify a hinge construction rather than assuming one. A lift-off lid and base is simpler, cheaper and often reads more modern, but it needs somewhere to put the lid during the moment it is opened. A drawer or slide box protects the contents in a pocket better than a hinged lid, which can spring open. If the box will be carried in a pocket before it is opened, that last point is worth more than it sounds.
Finish, because this box is photographed
Ring boxes end up in photographs more often than almost any other pack. Soft touch and matte laminates handle fingerprints differently from gloss, foil stamping on a small lid reads clearly at close range, and a printed or debossed inner lid gives you a second surface that only the recipient sees. The digital proof before printing is the point at which to check how the brand mark sits on a lid that small.
Ordering
Minimum order is 100 boxes and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. We make in West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China, with turnaround quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Wrapped rigid constructions sit at the longer end, and specialty imported work can run up to about 12 weeks.
Order at custom ring boxes. If you want the short version of this decision, what size ring box do I need answers it in fewer steps.
Send the tallest setting height, the band width and the presentation you want through the quote form and we will come back with an internal dimension, an insert recommendation and a written price. There is no sample kit to buy; samples are arranged through the quote conversation.
