Before anything else, a naming check, because the two terms collide in search. A robe box is a flat apparel or gift box holding a folded bathrobe or dressing gown. A wardrobe box is a tall moving carton with a metal bar for hanging clothes, a completely different structure with a completely different spec sheet. If you came here for the moving carton, wardrobe box dimensions is the page you want.
Fold first, measure second
A robe has no fixed dimensions. Two robes with the same labelled size fold to different footprints depending on sleeve cut, length and whether there is a shawl collar. So the method is physical rather than theoretical: take the largest size you sell, fold it the way your packing bench will fold it every time, and measure the result. Do that with the actual fabric, because folding technique varies and a fold you invent at the desk is not the fold that happens at volume.
What actually changes the depth
| Variable | Effect on depth | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Terry or waffle weave | Lofts considerably, and springs back under a lid | Measure with a light hand on the stack, not pressed flat |
| Satin or jersey | Lies close to flat | A shallower box reads as more premium, so do not overspecify |
| Belt and loops | Adds a ridge across the stack | Fold the belt separately or under the body, then remeasure |
| Tissue and ribbon | Adds a few millimetres, and more at the crossing point | Include them in the measured stack |
| Insert card or booklet | Adds its own caliper | Decide whether it sits on top or under the garment |
The lid problem
If you are specifying a rigid two-piece robe box, the lid sits over the base, so the outside dimension is larger than the internal on every axis and the lid has its own depth. When a supplier quotes you a size, ask directly whether it is internal or external. A lid that just kisses a lofted terry stack will bow in the middle, and the photograph you take of it will show the bow. Allow depth so the lid sits flat with the garment relaxed.
Measuring routine
- Fold the largest size you stock, using the fold your team will use every day.
- Measure length and width at the widest point of the folded stack, including any sleeve edge that sits proud.
- Measure depth with a flat board resting on the stack under its own weight.
- Add tissue, ribbon, card and any polybag to that measurement.
- Write it as internal length x width x depth and mark it internal on the quote.
Board, print and ordering
Apparel boxes are normally either a folding carton for volume and flat storage, or a rigid lid and base wrapped in printed paper for gifting. Rigid gives you the weight and the lift that a premium robe supports, folding cartons give you storage efficiency and a lower unit cost. Minimum order is 100 boxes. Unit pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, and the die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included. Three lanes are available, rush (expedited production with air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, with specialty imported constructions running up to about 12 weeks. We produce in West Chicago and in Guangzhou.
Fold one, measure it, and send the three numbers with a quote request. If the robes ship direct to customers rather than to a store, read how to package apparel for ecommerce first, because the outer pack changes the answer.
