A subscription box is the one packaging decision you cannot easily change your mind about. The size repeats every month, so a footprint chosen carelessly compounds into a recurring shipping bill and a curation constraint you did not intend to sign up for. Get the interior right once and it pays back every cycle.
Size for the heaviest month, not the first one
Most subscription boxes are sized around the launch curation, which is usually the most carefully chosen and the most compact. Six months later a bulky item arrives and the whole month gets re curated around the box. Decide up front what your maximum item profile looks like, in height especially, and size for that. Depth is the dimension that constrains curation the most and it is also the dimension that costs the most in carrier terms, so it deserves the argument.
The interior stack
- Base layer. The heaviest and flattest items, laid so the box balances.
- Insert or divider. Its board thickness comes out of your usable interior, on every axis it crosses.
- Feature item. The item you want seen first when the lid comes up. It sets the depth.
- Printed card or booklet. Usually sits on top, and it needs the footprint to lie flat rather than curl.
- Void fill. Tissue, crinkle or paper. Decide this before you quote, because it is part of the size.
Common subscription footprints and what they hold
| Footprint (inside, inches) | Typically holds |
|---|---|
| 8 x 6 x 2 | Small goods, cosmetics samples, cards, a single feature item lying flat |
| 10 x 8 x 3 | A mixed curation of small to medium items with an insert |
| 12 x 9 x 4 | Bottles laid down, apparel, several stacked items with tissue |
| 14 x 10 x 4 | Larger multi item curations and gift style boxes |
These are commonly ordered footprints rather than a fixed range. Because the die is included, a size between two of these rows costs no more to tool than a familiar one, so measure your actual curation and ask for the exact interior you need.
Check it against the carrier before you tool
Take your intended outside dimensions, apply your carrier's dimensional weight divisor from your own rate agreement, and compare the billable weight to the actual weight of a filled box. If dimensional weight wins, either the box is too big or the contents are too light for it. Losing half an inch of depth is often the cheapest saving available to a subscription brand. Remember that board thickness adds to the outside, so a heavier flute makes the parcel bigger without changing the interior at all.
Ordering
The minimum is 100 boxes per size and artwork, priced from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and confirmed on your written quote. Included: the die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints. Turnaround is stated per product across Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea) lanes, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Because subscription volumes are predictable, the Cost saver lane usually makes sense once you know your monthly number.
