Tablet packaging fails in a predictable way: someone types the screen size into a spec sheet and treats it as a box dimension. It is a diagonal. This guide converts it into real numbers, then walks the rest of the cavity.
Convert the diagonal
Screen sizes are diagonal measurements, and the aspect ratio does the rest. For a 4:3 panel the width is about 0.8 of the diagonal and the height about 0.6, which is the 3-4-5 triangle you already know. For a 16:10 panel it is about 0.85 and about 0.53. So a nominal 10 inch 4:3 panel is roughly 8 x 6 in of active area. That is geometry, not a size chart, and you can check it yourself.
A useful physical anchor: ISO A4 paper is 210 x 297 mm, which puts a sheet of A4 in the same broad territory as a 10 to 11 inch class tablet including bezel. Hold your product against a sheet and you will immediately see whether your numbers are plausible.
Measure the device as it ships
The panel is not the product. Add the bezel, the housing and anything applied before packing. Work through it deliberately:
- Bare device, measured at its widest and thickest, including any camera bump
- Applied screen film or protective sleeve, if it goes on before packing
- A bundled case or folio, which can add more depth than the tablet itself has
- Any retail security tag or sticker on a face
Layer the accessories
Depth is where tablet cartons grow. Decide the layout before you decide the number: device on top in a tray, accessories in a compartment beneath is the common arrangement, but a side compartment produces a wider, shallower box that can face better on a shelf. Measure the loaded tray, not the parts. Then add clearance so the lid closes without pressing on the screen, because pressure on a packed display is exactly the failure mode you are trying to avoid.
Board and build
Tablets usually ship in a rigid or a rigid-feel carton for presentation, with a corrugated shipper around it for transit. Those are two separate specs and two separate sets of dimensions: the external size of the retail box becomes the internal requirement of the shipper. Say clearly on each quote whether the dimensions you have supplied are internal or external, because on a rigid box the wrapped chipboard wall is thick enough that confusing the two produces a box that does not close.
Ordering
Minimum order is 100 boxes. Price starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote once you have settled rigid versus folding, the insert and the finish. The cutting die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included, so it costs nothing extra in tooling to cut the cavity to your exact device rather than a near-standard size. Production comes from West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight, a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported rigid formats can run up to about 12 weeks.
If your question is more specific than the method, what size tablet box do I need works through it by scenario. For related device packaging, see cell phone accessory packaging. Send the device dimensions measured with the case on, plus your accessory list, through the quote form and ask for the retail box and the outer shipper quoted together.
