A test strip carton is a kit carton. The strips themselves are thin and small, and they are rarely the component that decides any of the three dimensions. What decides them is everything packed alongside: the vial or blister card, the desiccant, and above all the folded instruction leaflet.
List the components before you measure anything
- Strip presentation: a capped vial, a foil blister strip, or individually foil wrapped strips.
- Desiccant, if the strips ship in a vial rather than sealed foil.
- The instruction leaflet, at its folded size.
- Lancets or a lancing device, if the kit includes them.
- Control solution vial, if included.
- A meter or reader, if the carton is a full starter kit rather than a refill.
The leaflet usually sets the box
Instruction leaflets carry a lot of required text, and text drives the flat size, which drives the folded size. A leaflet folded to 3 x 4 in sits happily under a small carton lid. The same content folded to 4 x 6 in forces the whole carton wider. Before you fix the carton, ask whoever is producing the leaflet for the folded dimension and the fold pattern, and if the carton is tight, ask whether a different fold or a smaller type area is possible. Changing the leaflet fold is nearly always cheaper than changing the carton.
Building the internal dimension
| Component | Measurement to take | Axis it usually drives |
|---|---|---|
| Strip vial | Diameter and capped height | Depth, or one footprint axis if laid flat |
| Blister card | Card outline and blister dome height | Both footprint axes plus depth |
| Folded leaflet | Folded length and width, and stack thickness | Both footprint axes |
| Lancing device | Overall length | Carton length |
| Insert or tray | Wall caliper and overall outline | All three |
Assemble the real kit, hold it the way it will be loaded, and measure the loaded stack. Adding individual component heights on paper always undercounts, because packed components do not nest perfectly.
Panel space for the printed information
Diagnostic cartons carry lot number, expiry, storage conditions and often a barcode and a serialised code. All of that needs clear panel area, which is a size constraint, not just a design one. Work out the artwork panel requirements in parallel with the dimension so you do not discover at proof stage that the side panel is too narrow. We print what your artwork specifies; confirm your own labelling requirements with your regulatory advisor, since we do not certify compliance for any market.
Ordering and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 cartons, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. Production runs from West Chicago in the US or Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Related formats are covered in our medical device boxes buying guide, and the carton itself is at research and diagnostic boxes.
Send a list of kit components with the folded leaflet size and your quantity. Request a quote and we will return an internal carton dimension and an insert option.
