Watch boxes get sized from the wrong number. People start with the case diameter, which is the one figure printed in the product spec, and end up with a box that will not close over the strap. The dimension that actually rules is the coiled strap wrapped around a pillow. Get that right and the rest follows.
Measure it in this order
- Coil the strap around the pillow you intend to use, as it will be presented.
- Measure the outside of that coil, across and top to bottom. This is your minimum interior footprint and height.
- Add clearance so the lid never presses the crystal or the buckle.
- Only then decide the outside style: two piece lid, drawer and sleeve, or hinged flip top.
Typical interior sizes
| Build | Typical interior (in) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single watch, pillow | About 3.5 to 4.5 square, 2.5 to 3.5 tall | The common retail presentation box |
| Single watch, flat tray | About 4 x 4 x 1.5 | Slimmer, suits mesh and bracelet straps laid flat |
| Watch plus accessories | About 6 x 4 x 3 | Room for a link kit, a cloth or a warranty card |
| Two watch set | About 8 x 4 x 3 | Two pillows side by side with a divider |
| Travel roll or case | About 8 to 10 long, 3 to 4 across | Cylindrical or elongated, sized to the rolled strap |
The pillow is a component, not a detail
A watch pillow of about 2.5 to 3 inches long and 1.25 to 1.75 inches across suits most straps. Too small and the strap sags and the watch looks limp in the box. Too large and a shorter strap will not close around it. If you sell across strap lengths, either standardize on the smaller pillow or specify a compressible one. State the pillow dimensions on your quote so the interior is built around the loaded pillow rather than the empty box.
Rigid, folding or corrugated
Watch packaging is almost always wrapped rigid board, because the weight and the lift of the lid are part of the product experience and a folding carton cannot deliver either. Rigid also takes foil, embossing and a fabric or paper lining cleanly. The trade off is cost per unit and lead time, since rigid boxes are assembled rather than folded flat and specialty imported builds can run up to about 12 weeks. A printed folding carton or an E flute two piece box is the sensible choice for a lower priced line or for the outer shipper that protects the presentation box in transit. Related structures are covered on our rigid box page.
Ordering and lead time
Minimum order is 100 boxes, which fits a limited release or a first retail order. Unit pricing starts at about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and the real figure is written on your quote, because rigid construction, lining and finishing move a watch box price far more than its size does. The three lanes apply here as everywhere: rush runs expedited production onto air freight for a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job, standard flies from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and cost saver moves by sea. Free US shipping, the die and plates, design help and a digital proof sit inside the quoted price. For the wider product page, see custom watch boxes.
