Ask why a pouch stops closing properly and the answer is almost always the track: the wrong style for the product, or the right style in the wrong place. A zipper track is a simple component with a few decisions attached to it, and they are worth making deliberately.
How it is built
Two extruded plastic profiles, one with a ridge and one with a groove, are welded to the inside faces of the pouch film near the top. Pressing them together interlocks the profiles. The pouch is then sealed across the top above the zipper during filling, which is what keeps the contents factory fresh until first opening. That top strip is designed to be removed: a tear notch at the edge or a laser score across the web gives a clean opening line just above the track.
The common styles
| Style | How it behaves | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard press to close | Two profiles pressed together by hand | Most dry goods, snacks, coffee, pet treats |
| Pocket zipper | A recess below the track catches stray product | Powders, fines, anything that fouls a plain track |
| Slider | A plastic slider runs along the track to open and close it | Bulky products, frequent reopening, easier for weak hands |
| Double track | Two parallel profiles for a tighter closure | Aroma sensitive products, longer in use life |
| Child resistant slider or press lock | Requires a deliberate action to open | Products where restricted access is part of the brief |
Child-resistant features are available on request. We do not certify compliance; confirm requirements for your jurisdiction and product.
Why tracks fail
- Product in the track. Powder, sugar, oil or fines sit in the groove and hold the profiles apart. A pocket zipper or a taller headspace solves it better than a stronger track.
- Cut too low. The customer scissors the pouch open below the seal and takes the top of the zipper with it. A tear notch and a printed opening line prevent most of this.
- Too little headspace. A pouch filled to the track is hard to close and looks overfull. Leave room between the fill line and the zipper.
- Wrong film weight. A heavy pouch on a light film pulls at the weld. Track and film are specified together.
What to state when you quote a pouch
The product and its particle size, the fill weight, the pouch format, whether you need a tear notch or laser score, whether the zipper is standard, pocket or slider, and whether a child resistant option is part of the brief. Also say whether you fill by hand or on a line, since a slider changes how the pouch runs.
The minimum is 100 units. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote. Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush, which is expedited production plus air freight, standard on air, and cost saver on sea, from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, with specialty imported structures running up to about 12 weeks. Design support, the plates, US shipping and a digital proof are included.
If you are also weighing the film structure, mono material packaging covers the barrier tradeoff. To order, see custom stand up pouches or mylar bags, or send your product details with a quote request.
