What Is Aqueous Coating?

Key Takeaways

  • Aqueous coating, usually shortened to AQ, is a water based coating applied on press as the sheet runs, which is why it adds little time and modest cost.
  • It is available in gloss, matte and satin, protects ink from scuffing and fingerprints, and does not yellow the way older oil based varnishes could.
  • Because it is water based and thin, a sheet finished with AQ generally stays in the paper recycling stream, unlike a sheet laminated with plastic film.
  • AQ gives less depth of gloss than UV and less protection than lamination. Pick it when recyclability, speed and cost matter more than maximum shine.

Aqueous coating is a clear, water based coating rolled onto a printed sheet while it is still on the press. It dries by evaporation and absorption almost immediately, which is what makes it the default protective finish on folding cartons: the sheet can be stacked and converted quickly, and the coating costs less than the alternatives.

What it does for the box

Three practical things. It stops wet ink from transferring onto the back of the next sheet, which speeds the whole job. It gives the finished carton scuff and fingerprint resistance, which matters on dark solids and on anything that gets handled on a shelf. And it evens out the surface so the printed colour looks consistent rather than patchy across coated and uncoated areas.

It comes in gloss, matte and satin, and there are soft touch variants that give a velvety feel. Matte AQ on a dark box is noticeably more scuff prone than gloss, which is worth knowing before you commit a black carton to a matte finish.

Aqueous, UV and lamination compared

FinishFeel and lookProtectionRecycling behaviour
Aqueous (AQ)Gloss, matte or satin; natural paper feel retainedGood scuff and fingerprint resistanceWater based and thin, so the sheet generally stays repulpable
UV coatingMuch higher gloss; can be applied as spot UV for contrastHard surface, can crack on a heavy foldA cured plastic layer; check with your recycler before making claims
Film laminationDeepest matte or gloss, very tactile, soft touch availableHighest, including moisture resistanceA plastic film bonded to paper, which complicates paper recycling

Where AQ is the right call

Choose it when you want a clean, protected carton at sensible cost and you would rather keep the pack in a single material stream. Food and personal care cartons use it heavily for exactly that reason. It also suits any job where the schedule is tight, since it does not add an offline pass the way lamination does.

Choose something else when the pack has to survive moisture, when you want the depth of a true soft touch laminate, or when the design depends on a spot gloss effect against a matte ground. Those are lamination and UV jobs.

What to put on the quote

Say the coating type, the sheen, and which faces get it. Outside only is standard; inside coating is sometimes needed for food contact or for rub resistance on a printed inner. If any part of the box gets glued, the coating usually has to knock out in the glue area, and if you are foil stamping, the sequence matters. Say what claims you intend to make on pack about recycling, because we will only print claims you can substantiate.

Minimum, price and lead time

Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. Lanes are Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea), with a floor of from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks and Rush adds about 7 to 25%, depending on the job.

If reducing the plastic in your pack is the goal, read how to make packaging more sustainable first, since the coating is usually a smaller lever than the box size. Then send your artwork and finish preference to /quote/.
