What Is SIOC Packaging?

Key Takeaways

  • SIOC stands for Ships In Own Container. The product's own retail pack goes through the parcel network without being put inside a second shipping box.
  • It changes the design brief: the retail box now has to survive handling, carry a shipping label, and hide nothing that needed an overbox to protect it.
  • SIOC status for a marketplace programme is granted by that marketplace through its own testing and approval process. We build packaging to your spec; we do not perform or grant that approval.
  • Minimum is 100 boxes from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, with the die, the plates and a digital proof included.

SIOC is short for Ships In Own Container. The idea is simple: instead of putting a retail box inside a shipping box, the retail box is built well enough to be the shipping box. Marketplaces push it because it removes a layer of material and a step of labour, and sellers like it because it removes the cost of the outer carton.

What changes when a box has to ship alone

  • Structure. The box takes the drops, the compression in a trailer and the conveyor handling. That usually means a stronger board grade and a closure that holds without being taped by hand.
  • The label area. A shipping label has to go somewhere flat, unbroken and large enough, and it will cover whatever artwork sits under it. Design a label zone rather than letting the warehouse pick one.
  • Internal retention. With no void fill around the outside, the insert is the only thing stopping the product moving. Retention and suspension designs matter more here than in an overboxed pack.
  • Finish. Soft touch laminates and delicate foils scuff in a parcel network. A finish that looks good in a retail box can look tired after a conveyor.
  • Privacy. A box that shows exactly what is inside is fine on a shelf and sometimes unwelcome on a doorstep.

Where the approval comes from

SIOC in the marketplace sense is a programme, and the marketplace decides whether a given pack qualifies. That normally means submitting the pack, having it assessed against their handling standards, and being listed as approved. It is their decision and their test. We can build a box to the dimensions, board and structure you specify, but we do not run that testing and we do not certify or grant that status. Confirm the current requirements directly with the marketplace before you commit to a run, because programme rules change.

Is it always cheaper?

Not automatically. You remove an outer carton and the labour to pack it, and you add board grade, a stronger closure and sometimes a better insert. It tends to win on products that were being put in a box only slightly larger than themselves, and it tends to lose on fragile items that genuinely need a cushioned outer. Run the numbers on your own damage rate, not on a general claim.

The minimum is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included. Production is quoted per product in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Two plants, West Chicago and Guangzhou.

Bring the marketplace requirements you have been given to your quote request, with the product weight and dimensions, and we will quote board and structure against them. If the retention design is the open question, what a box insert is covers the options.
