UV coating is a clear liquid finish rolled over a printed sheet and cured in a fraction of a second by ultraviolet lamps. Because it cures rather than dries, it sits on the surface as a hard film instead of soaking into the board. That is where the high gloss and the scuff resistance come from.
The three ways it gets used
- Flood gloss UV. The whole printed surface is coated. Colours look deeper, the panel resists handling marks, and the box reads as premium from a distance. Fingerprints do show on dark solids.
- Matte UV. The same chemistry with a flat finish.
- Spot UV. Applied only where you want it, usually over a logo, a pattern or a product name on an otherwise matte panel. The contrast is the whole point, and it only works if there is a matte or uncoated area next to it.
How it compares with the other finishes
| Finish | What it is | Feel | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqueous (AQ) coating | Water based, dries in line | Light sheen, minimal build | General protection, food adjacent work |
| Gloss UV | Cured liquid film | Hard, high shine | Retail cartons, high impact colour |
| Matte UV | Cured liquid film, flat | Smooth and soft looking | Premium and minimalist brands |
| Spot UV | UV in selected areas | Raised, tactile contrast | Logos, patterns, product names |
| Lamination (gloss, matte, soft touch) | A film bonded to the sheet | Thickest and most durable | Rigid boxes, anything handled repeatedly |
Four things to know before you specify it
- It needs its own artwork layer. Spot UV is supplied as a separate layer in the file, in a named spot colour, exactly like a dieline. Our page on packaging artwork file formats covers how to set that up.
- It is not a moisture barrier. UV coating resists scuffing and handling. It is not a grease or water barrier, and anything with a food contact or barrier requirement needs a different specification.
- Some adhesives and inks do not like it. Glue tabs are normally left uncoated so the box can be glued, and labels applied over a gloss UV panel can lift. Tell us where a label or sticker will go.
- You cannot easily write on it. If a panel gets a handwritten batch code or a signature, leave that area uncoated.
Is it worth the money?
Flood coating is a small addition on most jobs and generally worth it for anything that will be handled in a store. Spot UV is a bigger step because it adds a separate pass, so it earns its place on a hero panel rather than across the whole box. If the decision is really about perceived quality, compare it against soft touch lamination on your specific board before you assume UV is the premium option.
Ordering, minimum and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 units, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote, since coating, print coverage and board all move the figure. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included.
Turnaround runs in three lanes: rush (expedited production with air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported work can run up to about 12 weeks. Rush carries a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job. We produce in West Chicago and in Guangzhou. Finishes like these are most often specified on folding cartons, which you can order from our folding boxes page.
If you are torn between gloss, matte and spot, say so when you request a quote and we will price the options side by side so you can see what the upgrade actually costs at your volume.
