A pendant is small enough that the box is barely about the jewellery at all. What decides the size is how the piece reaches the customer, because the three routes need genuinely different packaging. Pick the route, and the size question mostly answers itself.
Route one: handed over a counter
Here the box is part of the purchase experience, so hand feel wins. A rigid two piece box with a wrapped chipboard body, a foam pad and a printed or foiled lid is the standard answer. Size it from the pad outward and expect the external dimensions to be noticeably larger than the cavity, because a rigid wall carries chipboard plus wrap on both faces. There is no postage constraint on this route, so you can afford the extra millimetres.
Route two: mailed to the customer
Now depth is the expensive dimension. Flat mail rates are banded by thickness as well as weight, and a box a few millimetres over a band raises the cost of every order you ship. A folding carton with a die cut card insert keeps the pack thin and still presents well. If you want the rigid look without the thickness, a shallow tray and sleeve is the usual compromise. Confirm the current rate bands with your carrier before you commit, because they are the real constraint.
Route three: both, from the same SKU
This is where brands usually get stuck, and the way out is to separate the two jobs. Use one presentation box that goes in the customer's hand, and a separate mailer around it for the online orders. Trying to make one box do both usually means a rigid box that is too thick to post economically, or a thin box that feels wrong at the counter.
What each route costs you
| Route | Format that fits | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Counter gifting | Rigid two piece or hinged rigid | Thickness, and a longer lead time on rigid work |
| Ecommerce only | Folding carton with a card insert | Some perceived value at the moment of opening |
| Both | Presentation box plus a separate mailer | Two items on the quote instead of one |
The measurements to have ready
Whichever route you choose, three numbers move the conversation forward: the pendant at its widest, the height including the bail and jump ring, and where the chain sits (coiled behind the pad, threaded through a slot, or absent). Send those and the format, and the cavity can be drawn. The full procedure is on how to size a pendant box.
Getting it made
Pendant boxes start at 100 units, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The cutting die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, so a cavity cut to your pad costs no more to tool than a near standard one. Turnaround is stated per product across three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days of production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Rigid and specialty imported constructions can run up to about 12 weeks, so a gifting season deadline needs an early start.
Tell us which route the product takes and send the pendant measurements, and we will recommend a format and price both options if you want to compare. Start at request a quote, or see the range on the custom jewelry display boxes page.
