What Size Stackable Storage Box Do I Need?

Key Takeaways

  • For warehouse storage, pick a footprint that divides into the 48 x 40 in pallet: 12 x 10 in gives 16 per layer, 16 x 10 in gives 12, 12 x 20 in gives 8 and 24 x 20 in gives 4, all with no overhang.
  • The divisors that tile a standard pallet cleanly are 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 24 in on the 48 in side, and 4, 5, 8, 10 and 20 in on the 40 in side.
  • For a shelf, the depth of the fixture is the hard limit, and retail gondola shelving is commonly built in the 16 to 22 in range, so confirm the exact figure with the fixture owner.
  • iBox Factory runs storage boxes from 100 units with the die, plates, design support and a digital proof included, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes.

Most people size a storage box around what goes in it. For a stackable box that is the wrong starting point, because the expensive constraint is almost always the space it lives in: a pallet, a shelf, a van, or a person's arms. Start there and work inward.

If the constraint is the pallet

The standard North American pallet deck is 48 x 40 in. A footprint that divides into both numbers fills a layer completely, with no overhang and no dead deck space. Overhang is the one to avoid, because a case whose corners hang past the deck edge loses a large share of its stacking strength, and the corners are what carry the load.

The clean divisors are short: 48 divides by 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 24. 40 divides by 4, 5, 8, 10 and 20. Any pairing of one from each list tiles perfectly.

External footprintBoxes per layerPractical note
24 x 20 in4Large and light, gets heavy fast if filled with dense goods
16 x 20 in6Good compromise for file and archive use
12 x 20 in8Long and narrow, easy to carry one handed
16 x 10 in12Comfortable two handed carry
12 x 10 in16Small enough to stay under a sensible lift weight
8 x 10 in24Parts bins and small component storage

Note that these are external figures. The cavity inside is smaller by the board caliper on each wall, so work out your contents against the internal number rather than these.

If the constraint is a shelf

Shelf depth is a hard stop. A box deeper than the fixture either overhangs into the aisle or has to be turned, which usually ruins the facing. Retail gondola shelving is commonly in the 16 to 22 in depth range as an industry-typical figure, and domestic and office shelving varies far more than that. Measure the fixture, or get the number from whoever owns it, before you choose anything.

If the constraint is a person

A box that a human carries has a practical weight ceiling, and weight is volume multiplied by the density of the contents. Paper files are dense. Textiles are not. A 24 x 20 in box full of paper is a two person lift. If the box will be carried regularly, work backwards from a comfortable weight to a volume, then to a footprint, rather than designing the largest box that fits the pallet.

Then check the height

Height is the free variable once the footprint is fixed, and it is set by three things: the contents, how many layers you want on a pallet within the stack height limit, and whether a lid is used. Remember the lid adds to the external height, and a telescoping lid adds a clearance gap on every side of the base as well.

What to send when you ask

Three numbers get a useful answer fast: the space constraint you are designing to, the contents at their bulkiest, and how high the boxes will be stacked. The last one drives the board grade more than the dimensions do. If you want the measuring procedure rather than the space first approach, it is on how to size a stackable storage box, and the layer patterns themselves are covered on what is a pallet pattern.

Minimum, price and turnaround

Storage boxes start at 100 units, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The cutting die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, so a footprint chosen to tile your pallet exactly costs no more to tool than a near standard one. Turnaround is stated per product in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days of production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.

Send the constraint, the contents and the stack height and we will size it around all three. Start at request a quote.
