Wholesale bakery buying is a volume decision on top of a fit decision. Get the fit right once, keep the dieline, and every reorder after that is a phone call. This page covers the formats, what each has to survive, and how the per unit price actually moves as quantity goes up.
Format by product
| Product | Box | Non negotiable feature |
|---|---|---|
| Layer and celebration cakes | Flat bottom box, often with a window | A base rigid enough to carry the cake by hand |
| Cupcakes | Box with a cupcake insert | An insert that grips the base so they do not tip |
| Pastries and viennoiserie | Auto bottom or tuck top box | Grease resistance, or the panel stains through |
| Cookies and brownies | Shallow box, sometimes with a divider | Depth control so the contents do not slide |
| Pies and tarts | Square or round base box | Height for a domed lid, base support under the tin |
Grease, moisture and windows
Butter based products stain plain board, and the stain shows through printed panels within minutes. If your product is buttery or fried, say so on your enquiry and we will confirm the board and coating we can run for it. We do not certify regulatory compliance for food contact, so confirm the requirements for your product and your jurisdiction. Windows are the other common request: a film window shows the product, adds a step in production and needs a border wide enough for the box to stay rigid where the window cuts the panel.
How wholesale pricing actually works
Every printed box carries fixed costs (dieline, plates, press setup, makeready) and variable costs (board, ink, finishing, labour). Fixed costs are spread across the run, which is why the second hundred boxes always costs less per unit than the first hundred. At iBox Factory the die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included rather than billed as setup, so the drop is about volume rather than about recovering a tooling bill.
Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote. Ask for two or three quantity breaks in the same quote and you can see exactly where your own curve flattens, which is the honest way to decide how much to hold.
Reordering and holding stock
Bakery demand is seasonal and perishable, but boxes are not. The practical pattern for a wholesale bakery is: standardise on the smallest number of sizes that covers your range, order deeper on those, and keep seasonal artwork to a sleeve or a sticker rather than a whole new dieline. That way one board order covers the year and the seasonal spend stays small.
Minimums and lead time
The minimum is 100 boxes per design. Turnaround is stated per product across three lanes: rush is expedited production plus air freight, standard is air, and cost saver is sea, which is the cheapest and the longest. The floor is from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. Rush adds about 7 to 25% depending on the job. Production runs at West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China.
If you are starting small rather than buying wholesale volume, low minimum bakery boxes covers a first order of 100. To price a wholesale run, send your sizes, formats and quantity breaks through the quote form.
