Pizza boxes are a volume purchase, so small per unit differences add up quickly and small structural mistakes repeat every single night. The three decisions that matter are size, board and print, and they should be made in that order.
Size is named after the pizza
| Pizza diameter | Box called | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 inch | 10 inch box | Personal and small pies |
| 12 inch | 12 inch box | The standard medium across most menus |
| 14 inch | 14 inch box | Large, the highest volume size for many kitchens |
| 16 inch | 16 inch box | Extra large |
| 18 inch | 18 inch box | Party and share sizes, needs the stiffest base |
Two practical notes. First, measure your actual pie, because a kitchen that stretches a "14 inch" to a genuine 14.5 will find the crust catching the box wall. Second, box height matters more than people expect: a deep dish or stuffed crust pie needs a taller wall, and that is a different box, not a variation of the same one.
Board and structure
A pizza box has to do three things: stay stiff enough to carry flat with one hand, survive being stacked in a delivery bag, and handle a hot product. A thicker corrugated grade gives you stacking strength and a base that does not sag under a loaded pie. A lighter grade saves money and storage space, which matters when you are holding hundreds of boxes in a small kitchen. If your delivery volume is high and boxes stack four or five deep in a bag, spend the extra on board rather than on print.
Corner vents and lid detail are structural too, not decorative. Decide with your quote whether you want them and where, because they are cut by the die.
Print that survives the kitchen
- One or two colours on kraft is the workhorse. It is the cheapest per unit and it reads well.
- Keep the artwork off the fold lines. Lid creases take handling abuse and print across them shows wear.
- Put the useful information on the lid. Phone number, ordering link and any promotion, since the lid is the panel that sits on a table.
- Full colour photographic work is possible but it is a different print route and a different price, so ask for it to be quoted separately.
State on the quote whether the board contacts the pizza directly or whether a liner or paper sits in between, and confirm what your product and market require. We build to the stated requirement rather than assuming one.
Ordering at volume
The minimum is 100 boxes per size and artwork. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and the exact figure is confirmed in writing. Included: the die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints, so a repeat order of the same artwork does not pay for setup twice. Production runs at two plants, West Chicago in the United States and Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is stated per product across Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea) lanes, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
