Most people asking about window box dimensions are really asking two questions: how big can the window be, and how far from the edges does it need to sit. Neither answer is a single number, because both depend on the caliper of your board and on where the folds are. What follows is how the decision is actually made.
The two dimensions on every window box
- The opening. The hole cut into the printed panel. This is the size your customer sees.
- The film patch. The clear sheet glued behind the opening. It has to overlap the opening on all four sides so there is material to glue to, so it is always larger than the hole.
When you tell us a window size, tell us which of the two you mean. Confusing them is the most common cause of a window that looks smaller than expected on the proof.
Margins that keep the carton usable
| Element | Working rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from a score or fold | Hold the opening back from every crease | Board at a fold does the structural work; cutting into it makes the panel collapse |
| Distance from a panel edge | Leave a continuous frame of board around the opening | The frame is what stops the panel flexing when the box is picked up |
| Film overlap | The patch extends past the opening on every side | Provides glue area, otherwise the film peels at a corner |
| Corner shape | Radius the corners rather than cutting them square | Square corners concentrate stress and start tears |
| Total open area | The more board you remove, the weaker the panel | Very large windows often need a heavier caliper to compensate |
Rather than publishing one number for every job, we set these clearances on the dieline for your specific board and structure. Design support is included, so send the carton dimensions and the shape you want and you will get a dieline back with the window placed correctly.
Window shape and the artwork
A window is cut with the same die as the carton, so an unusual shape does not add a separate tooling line. It does change how your artwork works: everything you remove is print you no longer have. Design the panel around the opening from the start, and check the digital proof to see how much of your logo and copy survives.
Where windows earn their cost
Windows pay off where the product is more persuasive than the packaging: bakery items, candles, soaps, toys and anything with visible color or texture. They pay off less on products that look plain out of context, or on boxes that spend their life inside a shipper. If the box is mailed, remember that a film patch is a weak point in a way a solid panel is not.
Cost, minimum and schedule
The minimum is 100 units per size and artwork. Bulk pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit, confirmed on the written quote, and the window is priced into the job rather than billed as tooling. Turnaround is quoted per product across three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight, roughly 7 to 25 percent more), standard (air) and cost saver (sea). Production starts from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. Windowing is an extra operation inside production, so allow for it when planning a tight date.
