Every other sizing guide starts with measuring the product. This one cannot, because a blanket does not have a size in any useful sense. A queen throw can occupy a shoebox or a suitcase depending on how it is folded and how hard it is squeezed. Sizing a blanket box is really three decisions taken in order: the fold, the compression, and the freight cost you are willing to carry.
Decide the fold before you measure
Fold pattern sets the footprint. Thirds lengthwise then halves gives a long narrow block; quarters both ways gives a square one. Retail and ecommerce pull in different directions here: a retail fold shows the face and the label, an ecommerce fold minimises the cube. Pick the fold, fold a real blanket, and only then reach for a tape measure.
Measure under real compression
A folded blanket resting on a table and the same blanket under a closed lid are two different heights. Measure the block with the compression the package will apply: under a belly band, under a lid held closed, or inside a bag if the blanket is bagged. Measure your loftiest SKU, not your thinnest, because the box has to close on the worst case. If your range spans very different lofts, price one box sized on the loftiest against two boxes, since tooling is included and the second die costs nothing.
Dimensional weight is usually the real cost
Blankets are light and bulky, which is the exact profile parcel carriers price on volume rather than weight. The common US domestic calculation multiplies length by width by height in inches and divides by 139. Run your candidate box through it.
| Box size | Cubic inches | Dim weight at divisor 139 |
|---|---|---|
| 18 x 14 x 8 in | 2,016 | About 15 lb |
| 16 x 12 x 6 in | 1,152 | About 9 lb |
| 14 x 11 x 4 in | 616 | About 5 lb |
The blanket weighs the same in all three. Compressing two inches out of the depth changes what you pay on every parcel for the life of the SKU. Confirm the current divisor with your own carrier, since carriers set their own.
Compression bags change the maths
A vacuum or roll compression bag can take a large depth out of a bulky item, at the cost of the bag, the labour and a blanket that arrives needing a shake. It is worth pricing when the depth saving pushes you into a materially smaller box. It is rarely worth it for a premium gift item, where the unboxing is part of what the customer paid for.
Retail presentation
Blankets sell on texture, so most retail packaging shows some product: a belly band, a sleeve with an open face, or a window carton. Each absorbs loft variation differently, and a band is the most forgiving of all. For related soft goods sizing, see towel box dimensions, and for sleeve formats, apparel sleeve boxes.
Ordering and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included. We produce in West Chicago in the US and in Guangzhou in China. Three lanes are quoted per product: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
Fold your loftiest blanket, compress it the way the package will, and send the three numbers with your quantity. Request a quote and we will size the box around that block.
