Towel Box Dimensions and Standard Sizes

Key Takeaways

  • US towel sizes are reasonably standardised: washcloth about 13 x 13 in, hand towel about 16 x 28 in, bath towel about 27 x 52 in, bath sheet about 35 x 60 in. Those are industry-typical finished sizes, not box sizes.
  • Size the box on the folded stack, not the flat towel. Fold the towel the way it will be displayed, compress it as it will be compressed, then measure length, width and height of the stack.
  • Depth is the unreliable number because terry loft varies by weight and by how hard the towel is compressed. Confirm depth with a physical folded sample before the die is cut.
  • Custom towel boxes start at a 100 unit minimum, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote, with the die and the plates included.

Towels are one of the few products where the item itself has a fairly standard size and the packaging still has none. The reason is loft: two bath towels with identical finished dimensions can produce folded stacks of very different heights. So the flat size tells you the footprint, and only a folded sample tells you the depth.

Finished towel sizes in the US market

These are industry-typical finished dimensions, widely used across the home textile market. Use them to plan a size range. They describe the towel, not an iBox Factory box.

ItemIndustry-typical finished size
WashclothAbout 13 x 13 in
Fingertip towelAbout 11 x 18 in
Hand towelAbout 16 x 28 in
Bath towelAbout 27 x 52 in
Bath sheetAbout 35 x 60 in

The box is sized on the fold, not the towel

Pick the display fold first, because it determines the footprint before anything else. A bath towel folded in thirds lengthwise and then in half gives a very different footprint from the same towel folded in half twice. Fold a real towel, put it where it will sit in the box, and measure the folded block. Halving a 27 x 52 in bath towel twice gives a footprint near 13 x 13 in on paper, but the fold rolls at the edges, so the measured block is always larger than the arithmetic.

Loft, compression and depth

Terry loft is a function of pile height and how hard the stack is compressed under a lid or a band. A loosely folded set fills a box that a banded set rattles around in. Two practical rules: measure the stack under the same compression the packaging will apply, and if you are packing a set of mixed sizes, build the real stack rather than adding individual heights. If you are also boxing bedding, the same compression problem is covered on our blanket box size guide.

Open, closed, window or sleeve

Towels sell on hand feel, which is why so much towel packaging leaves the product touchable. A belly band or a printed sleeve over a folded stack uses the least material and shows the most product. A window carton protects the towel while showing colour. A closed rigid box suits gift sets and hotel amenity programs where the box itself is part of the gift. Each of those makes a different demand on the depth tolerance: a sleeve can absorb a quarter inch of loft variation, a rigid lid cannot.

Ordering and turnaround

Custom towel boxes and sleeves start at a 100 unit minimum, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included, so a box cut to your actual folded block costs no more to tool than a near-standard size. We produce in West Chicago in the US and in Guangzhou in China. Three lanes are quoted per product: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. To order the box itself, see custom bath towel boxes.

Fold one real towel, or one real set, measure the block under the compression you intend, and send those three numbers with your quantity. Request a quote and we will build the internal dimension around the stack.
