A bottle neck box hangs a small package around the neck of a bottle. It is used for a sample, a recipe card, a miniature, a promotional add-on or a gift tag with substance. Almost all the engineering is in one hole.
The cutout is the whole job
The die cut opening has to do two contradictory things. It must be large enough to pass over the closure, which is the widest thing it has to clear, and small enough to rest on the shoulder instead of sliding down the body. If it is too tight, the person placing it on the line cannot fit it without tearing. If it is too loose, it slides down and looks like an accident.
That means the cutout is sized from the bottle, and it should be tested on the actual bottle before the die is cut. This is the one product where asking for a physical check before production genuinely pays for itself.
What to measure
| Measurement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Closure at its widest | The cutout must clear this, including a foil capsule, a crown, a screw cap or a swing top |
| Neck diameter below the closure | Where the box sits while it is being placed |
| Shoulder profile | A steep shoulder holds the box high, a gentle slope lets it slide |
| Neck length | Decides how much vertical room the box has before it fouls the label |
| Label top edge | The box should not cover or crease the bottle label |
Bottles vary far more than people expect. A wine capsule, a spirits closure and a crown-capped beer neck are three different diameters, and even within wine the shapes differ. Never size a neck box from a bottle photograph or a stated volume.
The box body
The body is usually a small, shallow carton so it hangs flat against the neck rather than swinging. Two shapes dominate: a flat card-like box for a leaflet or a coupon, and a slim carton for a sample sachet or a miniature. Keep the weight low. A heavy neck box pulls forward, tilts on the shoulder, and looks wrong in every shelf photograph you take.
Application, which is the hidden cost
- Neck boxes are usually applied by hand, so assembly time is a real cost at volume.
- If the box is applied before the bottle is cased, check that it still fits in the case.
- If it is applied in store, it has to survive shipping flat and be easy to fit quickly.
- A tear-off perforation on the cutout makes hand application faster but weakens the panel, so it is a trade-off worth deciding deliberately.
Ordering
The minimum is 100 boxes. Bulk pricing starts at about $0.48 per unit, confirmed on your written quote once size, board and print are set. The die and plates, design support, free US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, which matters here because the cutout usually needs at least one adjustment. Turnaround is stated per product across three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery, with specialty imported items up to about 12 weeks. Production is at West Chicago in the United States and Guangzhou in China.
If you are also packaging the bottle itself, see bottle box dimensions, and for wine specifically see wine box dimensions. Send your three neck measurements and your quantity to /quote/, and ask for a physical check on your bottle before the die is finalised.
