Wine Box Dimensions

Key Takeaways

  • Wine box dimensions are set by bottle shape rather than by volume: a standard 750 ml bottle is commonly about 11.5 to 12.5 inches tall, but the diameter varies from roughly 3 inches for a Bordeaux to roughly 3.5 inches for a Burgundy and wider again for sparkling.
  • A single-bottle box is therefore usually built around a footprint a little over the bottle diameter, with interior height set by the tallest bottle in the range plus clearance for the closure.
  • Multi-bottle boxes need partitions between bottles, because glass touching glass is the main cause of breakage in transit.
  • iBox Factory makes wine and bottle boxes to your interior dimensions from a minimum of 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote.

The mistake in wine packaging is sizing to the volume. Every 750 ml bottle holds the same wine and almost none of them share a silhouette. A Burgundy bottle has sloping shoulders and a wider body, a Bordeaux has straight sides and square shoulders, and sparkling bottles are heavier and wider still with a thicker punt. Size to the bottle you actually use.

Measure three things

  1. Maximum body diameter. Measure the widest point of the glass, not the label area.
  2. Total height including the closure. A capsule over a cork adds height, and a wire cage on a sparkling bottle adds more.
  3. Shoulder profile. A sloped shoulder means the bottle contacts a partition at a different height than a straight-sided one, which changes where the support has to be.

Typical bottle profiles

Bottle styleApproximate body diameterNotes
BordeauxAbout 3 inchesStraight sides, square shoulders, the most space efficient to pack
BurgundyAbout 3.4 to 3.5 inchesSloping shoulders, needs more footprint per bottle
SparklingAbout 3.5 inches or moreHeavier glass and a deep punt, so board grade matters more
Alsace or fluteAbout 2.8 to 3 inchesNoticeably taller and narrower, check interior height carefully

Standard 750 ml bottles generally fall between about 11.5 and 12.5 inches tall. If you sell a range, size the box to the tallest and widest bottle you carry, or you will end up running two dies.

Single bottle versus multi-bottle

  • Single bottle gift box. Usually a tall tuck, a rigid two-piece or a sleeve with a fitted insert. Presentation matters more than transit here, but the base still has to hold the weight of glass.
  • Two and three bottle. Partitions become mandatory. Bottles that touch each other break, and the damage usually happens on a drop onto a corner rather than in steady handling. See partition boxes for the insert options.
  • Six and twelve bottle. These are shipping formats. Board grade and stacking strength take priority over finish, and the partition grid is the structural component.

Weight, board and shipping

A filled 750 ml bottle is heavy, and glass is unforgiving. Specify the board against the filled weight of the full pack, and expect a multi-bottle box to need a heavier grade than the footprint alone would suggest. If the boxes will be shipped rather than handed over in store, check your carrier's rules for shipping alcohol before you commit to a construction. Those rules vary by carrier and by destination, they are yours to confirm, and iBox Factory does not certify that any pack meets them.

Ordering a bottle-fitted box

The minimum order is 100 boxes. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, dieline design support, free US shipping and a digital proof are included, so a box built around your exact bottle costs no tooling premium.

Production runs from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, across rush (expedited production plus air freight, about 7 to 25% premium depending on the job), standard (air) and cost saver (sea). Specialty imported items, including wrapped rigid presentation boxes, can run up to about 12 weeks.
