Compact cartons look like an easy job and they are not, because everything that goes wrong at this size goes wrong visibly. The carton is small enough that a millimetre of slack shows as a rattle, and the board is thick enough relative to the box that the caliper changes the external dimension noticeably.
Take the measurement from the closed compact
Close the compact and measure the outline at its widest and its longest. Round compacts are measured at the diameter, but check for a thumb catch or a latch that sticks out past the circle. Then measure thickness, and measure it at the hinge. On a mirrored compact the hinge barrel is almost always the thickest part of the assembly, and carton depth set from the pan side will bind.
Add clearance for the insert and for the fact that a carton is not a precision part. If the compact is shrink-wrapped or bagged before it goes in, measure the wrapped unit.
Caliper at small sizes
Paperboard is specified in points of thickness, where 1 point is 0.001 in. The ranges below are the industry-typical bands for small folding cartons, listed as a starting point for your conversation with a supplier rather than as an iBox size list.
| Caliper | Thickness | Behaviour in a small carton |
|---|---|---|
| 12pt to 14pt | 0.012 to 0.014 in | Folds crisply at small sizes. Light, and shows dents if the contents are heavy. |
| 16pt to 18pt | 0.016 to 0.018 in | The usual middle ground for cosmetic cartons. Holds a square shape on shelf. |
| 20pt to 24pt | 0.020 to 0.024 in | Substantial in the hand. Needs careful scoring or the folds will crack at this size. |
Heavier is not automatically better. A thick board on a tiny carton produces bulging panels and cracked folds, and it eats into the internal dimension twice on every axis.
Stopping the rattle
The cheapest fix is to size the cavity correctly and add a simple paperboard platform that lifts the compact to the window or the opening. A fence partition holds it from the sides without touching the face. A rise-up insert presents it when the carton is opened, which is worth the cost on a gifting SKU and pointless on a refill. Whatever you pick, approve it on a physical sample with the real compact inside, not on a drawing.
Finish choices that suit this size
Small cartons carry finishes well because the panel is small enough to be handled and looked at closely. Foil, embossing and spot gloss all read at this scale. Matte laminate feels good and scuffs, particularly at the tuck. If recyclability matters to your market, ask about an aqueous coating instead of a plastic laminate film, and see what aqueous coating is for the trade-offs.
Minimum, price basis and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included, so cutting the die to your exact compact costs no more than forcing it into a near-standard size. Lanes are Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, with specialty imported items up to about 12 weeks. Rush adds about 7 to 25%, depending on the job.
Send the closed measurements including the hinge, and tell us whether the carton is for shelf, ecommerce or a gift set. We will come back with a caliper and an insert at /quote/. To order the line directly, see compact boxes.
