Deodorant cartons look like the simplest job in personal care, and they are, right up until someone specs the box from the net weight on the label. US stick deodorants are commonly filled at around 2.6 oz, but that number describes the product inside the container, not the container. Measure the container.
Net weight is not a dimension
Fill weight varies with formula density. A solid, a gel and a cream at the same declared weight occupy different volumes in differently shaped containers. If you are switching contract manufacturers or moving a formula into a new container, re-measure rather than reusing the old carton dimension, because the carton is the thing your retailer will reject if it bulges.
Measuring an oval stick for a rectangular carton
- Major axis: measure the oval at its widest, usually across the face of the stick. This becomes the internal width.
- Minor axis: measure the oval at its narrowest, front to back. This becomes the internal depth.
- Height: cap seated, base fully retracted, measured from the bottom of the base to the top of the cap.
- Base flare: check whether the twist wheel or base is wider than the body. If it is, the base is your real major axis.
- Clearance: add enough on each axis that the stick loads without scuffing the printed inside face of the carton.
Why oval into rectangle wastes less than it looks
An oval in a rectangle leaves four small corner voids, and those voids are useful. They give the carton somewhere to flex during automated loading and they stop the stick from binding when the board is at the upper end of its caliper tolerance. Do not try to die cut the carton to the oval outline unless you have a reason: the cost is in the shape's effect on the packing line, not the tooling, since the die is included either way.
Shelf presentation and facings
Personal care cartons live or die on facings. The carton width you choose multiplies across every facing the retailer gives you, so a quarter inch of unnecessary width can cost you a facing on a crowded shelf section. If you have a planogram, read the shelf section width and the facings allocated before you finalise the width. Our explainer on what a planogram is walks through the arithmetic.
Board, finish and closure
Straight tuck end and reverse tuck end cartons cover most deodorant work. Straight tuck presents a cleaner front panel, reverse tuck is easier to hand pack. Bathroom humidity is a real consideration for anything that sits on a counter, so an aqueous or laminate coating on the outside is worth pricing. For the carton itself, see custom deodorant boxes.
Ordering and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 cartons, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included. We produce in West Chicago in the US and in Guangzhou in China. Three lanes are quoted per product: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
Send the three container measurements and your quantity, and we will come back with internal carton dimensions and a price. Request a quote to start.
