Halloween packaging is the same craft as any other box with one difference that outranks everything else: it is worthless on the second of November. That makes the calendar the first specification, not the artwork. Order from custom Halloween boxes once the dates are settled.
Back plan from the shelf date
Work backwards, not forwards. Pick the date stock must be on the shelf or in the fulfilment centre, then subtract delivery, production, proof approval and artwork time in that order. Approval time is the step that quietly eats a seasonal schedule, because it depends on people rather than on machines.
| Step | What it covers | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork | Design, dieline layout, print ready files | You, with design support included on the order |
| Digital proof | Checking placement, text, barcodes and colour breakdown before printing | Shared, and the fastest step to lose days on |
| Production | Die, plates, press and finishing | The lane you choose |
| Freight | Air on rush and standard lanes, sea on cost saver | The lane you choose |
| Delivery | From about 2 to 5 days once produced | Carrier |
The floor across production is from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, quoted per product, and specialty imported work can run up to about 12 weeks. If your box has a specialty finish, assume the longer end when you plan.
The lane is a cost decision, made early
Cost saver moves by sea and is the cheapest lane, and it is only available to people who ordered in time. Standard moves by air. Rush combines expedited production with air freight and carries a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job. That premium is the real price of a late seasonal decision, and it is avoidable by fixing artwork in summer rather than in September.
What actually suits the season
- Dark backgrounds. Large solid dark areas show every imperfection, so a fine flute or a smooth carton board holds them better than a heavy flute.
- Metallic and spot finishes. Foil and spot gloss read well against matte black, and both add a finishing step to the schedule.
- Spot colour. A season specific orange or purple is easier to hold consistent as a spot ink than as a process build, which is covered on CMYK versus Pantone for packaging.
- Die cut shapes and windows. Strong seasonal impact, and they are die features, so they have to be agreed before tooling rather than added at proof.
Quantity, and not being left with stock
The minimum is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. For a seasonal line that is the point: you can run a limited edition without committing to volumes you will still be holding next spring. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, so a one season dieline does not carry a tooling charge you have to amortise over years. If a design works, the same die can run again next year. We make at two plants, West Chicago and Guangzhou.
Tell us the date stock has to be on the shelf on your quote request and we will quote the lanes against that date rather than against a generic timeline. If the seasonal line is bakery or confectionery, the pie box guide covers the food side of the same run.
