Pie boxes fail in three predictable ways: the pie slides, the lid touches the crust, or the base goes soft. All three are decided at the specification stage. Order from pie boxes when the spec is settled.
Start at the pan, then add the dome
Pie pans are sold by nominal top diameter, and the common retail sizes are consistent enough to plan against. The number describes the pan, not the finished pie, so measure the widest point of a filled, finished pie including any overhanging crust.
| Nominal pan | What to measure for the footprint | What to measure for depth |
|---|---|---|
| 8 in | Outside of the rim including crimped crust overhang | Pan height plus the tallest point of the topping |
| 9 in | Outside of the rim, the most common retail size | Add extra for a lattice or a meringue peak |
| 10 in | Outside of the rim, plus any handle or lip on a deep dish pan | Deep dish pans are taller before the filling is counted |
| Slab or sheet | Both dimensions of the tray plus overhang | Usually shallow, but the footprint wants a rigid base |
Leave clearance so the lid never touches the crust. A meringue or a cream topping that meets the lid arrives looking like a return.
Board, grease and the base
The base does the work. A pie is heavy, it is carried flat on one hand, and if the base flexes the pie cracks. An auto bottom or a locking base that sets up square without assembly is the usual answer for a bakery bench, because it is faster to erect and stronger than a tuck base. Ask about grease resistant board or a coating if the pie is warm when boxed, and tell us whether the pie is boxed hot, because steam in a closed box is a different problem from grease and is solved with venting rather than coating.
Windows, carrying and stacking
- Windows. A window sells the product and weakens the panel it sits in. Keep a generous margin around the aperture and expect a slightly slower erect time.
- Handles. Useful on larger pies, and they need reinforcement or they tear out under a filled weight.
- Stacking. If boxes stack on a counter or in a delivery crate, the lid has to carry the box above it. Say how high they stack.
- Ventilation. Small vents keep a warm crust from going soft, and they are a die feature, so decide before tooling.
Food contact and labelling
Whether a board, coating or window film is suitable for direct contact with food is specific to your product and your market, and it is a question for your own regulator rather than an assumption to make from a packaging page. Bring the requirement to the quote as a specification along with any allergen or ingredient panel you must carry, and the box can be built and laid out to it.
Minimum, price and lead time
The minimum is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, so a box cut to your own pan and dome height is not a premium. Production is quoted per product in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Two plants, West Chicago and Guangzhou.
Measure a finished pie at its widest and tallest and send both with your quote request, then order from the pie boxes page. If you are also boxing seasonal ranges, the Halloween box guide covers how to back plan a dated run.
