Hexagon boxes get chosen for one reason: six flat faces give you more usable print panels than a square, and the shape reads as deliberate on a shelf full of rectangles. They also get specified wrong more often than any other shape, because there are two legitimate ways to state their width.
The two width measurements
| Term | What it measures | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Across flats | Face to opposite face, the narrow way across | Fitting the product inside, since a round candle sits inside the flats |
| Across corners | Point to opposite point, the wide way across | Shelf space, shipper size, how many fit per carton |
| Panel width | The width of one of the six faces | Artwork layout, since each panel is a separate print area |
| Depth | Top to bottom of the finished box | Product height plus lid overlap |
When you send dimensions, label which one you mean. A hexagon quoted at 4 inches across flats is a noticeably bigger box than one quoted at 4 inches across corners, and the difference shows up as a shipper that no longer fits. The full reference sits on hexagon box dimensions.
Lid options
- Lift-off lid. A shallow hexagonal cap over the base, the classic gift presentation.
- Telescoping lid. A deeper cap covering most of the base, sturdier and more material.
- Hinged flap. A single panel that folds over and tucks, cheaper and faster to fill.
- Window panel. A die cut opening in one or more of the six faces, which weakens the panel, so keep it away from the corners.
What the shape costs you
Six panels means six creases and a more complex die, and hexagons nest poorly in a shipping carton compared with squares, so you fit fewer per case and pay a little more freight per unit. Those are real costs and worth knowing before you commit. What you get back is print area and a silhouette that photographs well, which is why the shape is common for candles, bath products, small gift sets and tea.
Fitting a round product
Most hexagon boxes hold something cylindrical. Measure the product diameter, then make sure the across flats interior clears it, because the product sits inside the flats and not inside the corners. The six corners become dead space, which is either a problem to pad or an opportunity for a small insert card. Candle buyers usually want a snug fit so the jar does not rotate. Candle specific guidance is on custom candle boxes.
Minimum, price and lead time
The minimum is 100 boxes. Bulk pricing starts at about $0.48 per unit, with the number for your job set by size, board, print coverage and finish and confirmed in writing on the quote. The die and plates, design support, free US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, which matters on a shape like this where the die is the fiddly part.
Turnaround is quoted per product across three lanes: rush is expedited production plus air freight, standard is air, and cost saver is sea. The floor is from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. Boxes are produced at West Chicago in the United States or Guangzhou in China.
Send your product diameter and height, say whether your width figure is across flats or across corners, and add your quantity at /quote/. Ask for the flat dieline with the proof so you can check panel widths against your artwork.
