How to Package Coffee for Freshness

Key Takeaways

  • Four things degrade roasted coffee: oxygen, moisture, light and heat. Freshness packaging is a barrier problem first and a design problem second.
  • Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for days after roasting, which is why a one way degassing valve is standard on sealed bags. Without one, a fully sealed bag swells.
  • Ground coffee has far more surface area than whole bean and stales faster, so a format that is adequate for beans may not be adequate for grounds.
  • Coffee packaging starts at a 100 unit minimum, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote, with the plates and a digital proof included.

Roasted coffee starts losing aroma the moment it leaves the roaster. Packaging cannot stop that, but it decides how fast it happens. Four agents do the damage: oxygen oxidises the oils, moisture accelerates staling, light degrades aromatics, and heat speeds all of it up. Every decision below is aimed at one of those four.

Barrier is the whole job

A paper bag is not a barrier. A structure that keeps coffee fresh uses a laminated film with a barrier layer, commonly a metallised or foil layer, sometimes a clear high barrier film where the brand wants to show the beans. Kraft-look bags are usually a kraft outer laminated to a barrier inner, which is why they feel like paper and behave like film. If a supplier cannot tell you what the barrier layer in their structure is, treat the bag as decorative rather than protective.

The degassing valve

Freshly roasted beans give off carbon dioxide for days. Seal them in a genuinely airtight bag with no escape and the bag inflates, sometimes until the seal fails. A one way degassing valve lets CO2 out without letting oxygen in, which is why it appears on almost every sealed coffee bag. Two practical notes: valves are fitted during bag manufacture, so specify it up front, and a valve does not compensate for a weak barrier elsewhere in the structure.

Whole bean versus ground

Ground coffee exposes vastly more surface area to oxygen than whole bean, so it stales faster in the same bag. If you sell both, consider a higher barrier structure or a smaller pack size for ground, so the customer finishes it sooner. Single serve and pod formats take this further, sealing very small quantities individually.

Sealing and fill

A barrier film only works if the seal works. Heat seal integrity depends on the sealing jaw temperature, the dwell time and, above all, on nothing contaminating the seal area. Coffee dust in the seal is the most common cause of a bag that loses its vacuum on the shelf. If you are filling by hand, keep the seal zone clean and check seals regularly.

Cartons, sleeves and secondary packaging

Printed cartons and sleeves add shelf presence and block light, and they protect the primary bag from abrasion in transit. They do not add barrier. Treat them as presentation and protection around a sealed inner. For carton formats see custom coffee boxes, and for bag formats see custom vented coffee bags.

Ordering and turnaround

Minimum order is 100 units, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote, with the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing included. We produce in West Chicago in the US and in Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks.

Tell us your fill weight, whether you sell beans or grounds, and whether you need a valve and a zipper. Request a quote and we will spec a structure around it.
