Incense Box Dimensions and Standard Sizes

Key Takeaways

  • Incense stick packaging is sized by the stick, not the fragrance: measure the full stick including the uncoated bamboo tail, because that tail sets the internal length of the carton.
  • Retail stick lengths vary by origin and by format, so measure your own product rather than assuming a length. Cones and coils are sized by base diameter and height instead.
  • Stick count sets width and depth: bundle the count you actually sell, wrap it as it will be wrapped, and measure that bundle at its widest.
  • iBox Factory prints incense boxes from a 100 unit minimum with the die and plates included, so a long narrow carton cut to your stick length costs no more to tool than a stock shape.

Incense packaging is one of the few categories where a single dimension dominates. The carton is long and narrow because the product is long and narrow, and almost every problem on an incense box traces back to a stick length that was assumed rather than measured.

Sticks: measure the whole stick

Take a finished stick from production, not a sample from a different batch, and measure it end to end including the plain bamboo tail below the coated section. Add a small clearance at each end so sticks are not pressed against the carton ends, where they chip. That figure is your internal length. Then bundle the number of sticks in a retail pack, wrap the bundle as it will be wrapped, and measure across it twice, at the coated section and at the bare tails. The coated section is usually fatter, and that is the width to design to.

Cones, coils and backflow

FormatGoverning dimensionCommon packaging note
ConesBase diameter and height, then the layer countA tray or fitment stops cones rubbing and crumbling
Backflow conesSame as cones, with a deeper fitmentThe hollow channel makes them more fragile than solid cones
CoilsOutside diameter of the coil, laid flatUsually a shallow square or round box, stacked with interleaves
SticksFull stick length including the tailLong tuck end carton, sometimes with an inner sleeve

Carton style for a long thin box

Long narrow cartons need more attention to closure than square ones. A straight tuck end is simple and cheap, but a long panel can bow. A reverse tuck adds strength at the flaps. A sleeve over an open tray presents well for gift ranges and costs more per unit. If the pack is sold loose from a counter, a display tray holding a dozen cartons upright often sells better than the cartons lying flat, and that tray is sized from the finished carton, so specify the carton first.

Board, print and fragrance

Folding carton board in the common 14 to 24 point range covers most incense cartons. Kraft board reads natural and hides handling marks. Coated white board holds colour better if your branding depends on it. Fragrance oils can migrate, so if your sticks are heavily scented, tell us at quote stage: it affects the coating and adhesive choices and it is easier to plan for than to fix after a proof.

Ordering, minimum and lead time

The minimum is 100 boxes and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Three turnaround lanes are quoted per product: rush, which is expedited production plus air freight, standard on air, and cost saver on sea, from a floor of about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Specialty imported constructions can run up to about 12 weeks. The cutting die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof are included, which is why an internal length cut to your exact stick is not a cost decision.

To order, see incense boxes. If your artwork is not ready, what bleed is and why the dieline needs it will save you a proof cycle. Send your stick length and pack count with a quote request.
