Lip gloss cartons look like the simplest job in cosmetics packaging and are quietly one of the fiddliest. The product is small, tall and round, the carton is small, tall and rectangular, and everything that goes wrong follows from that mismatch.
What to measure
- Seated height. Tube plus cap, with the wand fully pushed home. A wand that is not fully seated adds several millimetres and it will be seated on the filling line.
- Widest diameter. Usually the cap, not the tube body. Measure the cap.
- Base diameter. If the base is narrower than the cap, the tube will lean inside a carton sized to the cap, which is exactly why an insert earns its cost.
Fill volume tells you nothing useful here. Two glosses at the same fill can sit in very different tubes. Source the component first, measure it, then draw the box.
The two problems tall narrow cartons have
They tip. A carton with a small footprint and a high centre of gravity falls over on a shelf and on a pallet layer. Widening the footprint slightly, or designing the carton to lie down as the primary shelf orientation, solves it. Decide which orientation the retailer will merchandise in before you design the front panel.
They rattle. A round tube in a rectangular carton moves, and movement scuffs both the tube label and the inside of the carton. A simple die cut board platform squares off the round tube. A rise up insert does the same job and lifts the product as the carton opens, which is worth the extra for a brand-led unboxing.
Materials and finish
| Choice | What it gives you | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Coated folding carton | Sharp print, ships flat, lowest cost per unit | Flexes if the board is too light for the height |
| Rigid two piece box | Weight in the hand, premium positioning | Ships assembled, so storage and freight cost more |
| Soft touch lamination | Velvet feel, deepens dark colours | Shows fingerprints on large dark panels |
| Foil stamping | Metallic brand marks at small scale | Needs enough panel space to register cleanly |
| Window patch | Shows the shade | Adds a film and a step, and complicates recycling |
Plan the copy before the artwork
On a carton this small, the required text competes directly with the brand design. Reserve panel space for the ingredient declaration, net contents and any shade or batch coding, and confirm the labelling rules that apply to the markets you sell into. It is far cheaper to make the carton a few millimetres taller now than to re-draw it after the copy arrives.
