Soft touch lamination is the finish that makes a box feel like it cost more than it did. Technically it is a matte polypropylene film laminated over the printed sheet, with a surface texture fine enough that your fingers read it as velvet or suede rather than as plastic.
Film, not coating
This is the distinction that matters commercially. A coating, such as an aqueous or UV varnish, is a liquid applied and cured, often in line with the press. A lamination is a physical film bonded to the sheet in a separate pass. That means soft touch adds a production step, adds a plastic layer to a paper pack, and behaves differently at the crease, where a film can occasionally crack on a heavy fold if the board and the score are not right.
What it does to your colours
| Artwork | Under soft touch |
|---|---|
| Deep navy, black, forest green | Richer and denser, the classic use case |
| Bright reds and oranges | Slightly muted, still strong |
| Neon and fluorescent inks | Noticeably dulled, usually not worth it |
| Fine white type on dark | Reads well, the matte surface reduces glare |
| Large uninterrupted dark panels | Beautiful, and the most prone to showing marks |
The two things people regret
It marks. Fingerprints and scuffs show on soft touch far more than on gloss, and worst of all on a large dark field. If the box is handled repeatedly in a store, or slides against other boxes in a case pack, plan for that. Breaking up the dark panel with pattern, texture or a spot gloss element hides handling marks remarkably well.
It affects end of life. A laminated board is a mixed material. Some recycling streams accept it, some do not, and if your brand is making a recyclability claim you need to check what your actual market accepts before you specify a film. If that is a problem, a soft touch aqueous coating is a different product that gets closer to the feel without the film layer, and it is worth asking to compare the two on a sample.
Pairings that work
Soft touch is the standard base for spot UV, because the contrast between a matte velvet field and a raised gloss element is the most legible finish combination in packaging. It also sits well under foil stamping and under blind emboss, where the shadow does the work. What it does not pair well with is another matte finish, because the two cancel each other out and the box just looks flat.
Ordering
Minimum order is 100 boxes, and pricing runs from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. A digital proof shows colour, but it cannot show feel, so ask for a physical sample of the laminate before you commit a large run to it. Turnaround is stated per product across three lanes: rush with expedited production and air freight, standard by air, and cost saver by sea, from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. The work is made in West Chicago and Guangzhou.
Soft touch shows best on rigid construction, covered on rigid gift boxes, and it is a common choice in cosmetics, as in the lip gloss box guide. Tell us your artwork and your handling environment when you request a quote.
