Serum is sold by volume and packed by geometry, and the two have almost nothing to do with each other. A 30 ml fill is a common size across skincare, but the bottle holding it might be tall and narrow or short and wide, and the dropper assembly can add well over an inch of height. Start with the bottle drawing.
What to pull off the bottle spec sheet
Your glass or PET supplier will have a dimensioned drawing. If they do not, measure a physical sample with calipers. Four numbers do most of the work.
| Measurement | What it decides |
|---|---|
| Overall height with the closure fitted | Carton depth, plus lid clearance |
| Body diameter at the widest point | Both internal footprint axes |
| Base diameter | Whether the bottle sits stable in an insert |
| Shoulder or neck diameter | Whether a retention insert can grip above the shoulder |
Round bottle, rectangular carton
A cylinder in a rectangle wastes space at the corners, and that is fine, but it also means the bottle can rotate and rattle. Two ways to handle it: size the cavity close to the diameter so the bottle is held by the flats, or size it generously and use an insert to locate it. If you are quoting the first option, the internal length and width both equal the widest body diameter plus a working clearance, typically enough to load the bottle by hand without force. Add the insert wall caliper on each side if an insert is used, since that wall sits inside the carton.
Height, droppers and the lid
Measure the bottle with the dropper or pump fitted and fully seated, not with the bulb resting proud. Then decide whether anything sits above the bottle: a folded leaflet, a card, a pad. Carton depth is the loaded height plus that stack plus a small clearance so the tuck flap closes without bowing the panel. A bowed panel is the most visible packaging defect on a shelf, and it almost always traces back to a depth measured without the closure.
Board caliper changes the outside
Folding cartons are commonly specified in points of caliper, with 14pt, 18pt and 24pt among the usual choices for cosmetic cartons. The caliper adds to every external dimension and it also changes how crisply the carton folds around a narrow cavity. A thin carton around a heavy glass bottle bulges; a heavy caliper around a small cavity resists folding. Our guide to paperboard thickness covers the trade off in more detail.
Ordering and turnaround
Serum cartons start at a 100 unit minimum, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included, which is why an internal size cut to your exact bottle costs no more to tool than a near-standard one. Production runs from West Chicago in the US or Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. For related skincare formats, see our skincare boxes buying guide or the custom cream boxes page.
Send the bottle drawing or a sample with your quantity and we will return the internal carton dimension, the insert option and a price. Request a quote to start.
